Mark - My interaction was via e-mail and involved a number of exchanges with the same individual. It would appear that phone calls are delivering different (and better) results. So it is time to pick up the phone…tomorrow.
Just to make sure I got this correct, they will no longer send the magazine because they can’t be sure it will make it…… but….. they will send you a check for the refund in the same mail system that would deliver said magazine….. Yeah, makes sense.
If I recall correctly from the informational email, the issue was more in the timeliness of delivery to international subscribers. I know from my experience as a longtime subscriber that it does take a considerable amount of time to get to Canadian addresses, often 2-4 weeks after US home deliveries. That’s just normal here. I’ve never had an issue not make it to me, even during various labour actions. Delay - yes, missing - nope.
That all said, the cheques should be in the mail, and will arrive at some point.
Success…I hope. A 10-minute wait and a 2-minute conversation with Customer Service this morning yielded a subscription cancellation and a refund to be received in 7-12 business weeks. Easy as pie. No explanation forthcoming as to why I received an e-mail saying refunds were not available to Canadian subscribers but I got what I wanted so I will let that go. No confirmation that I will receive a paper copy of the November/December issue. What a sad way to end a long-term relationship. A very unprofessional piece of work by the new publisher.
I don’t want this taken the wrong way, so please consider my intention here is honourable. I think that maybe we’ve beat this horse to death now, or at least close to it.
I’ve let them know of my disappointment with their decision. I’ve canceled my subscription.
Enough information is now in the couple threads for anyone else affected to proceed the same way.
A refund should be on its way, as long as it gets here I can move on. Do I lose some convenience, yes. Will it cost me a bit more money, probably. I’ll continue to support and participate in the forum, but some goodwill and trust has been lost. Unless some information of significant value surfaces in the future regarding this issue, I think we can let these threads go quiet now.
Fyi, there are ways to copy the dvd to your Hard drive, then ‘mount’ it, cdeating a virtual dvd drive. So you dont need to carry around a portable one.
For those interested, digital fsm is also available via pocketmags, an uk company. I subscribe to 3 British modeling mags from them. Their black friday sales are on now, you can get a digital sub much cheaper than print. I know this doesnt solve your issue with ‘renting’ vs ownership, but its an alternative to zinio. Hope this helps.
I was able to upload the 25-year DVD to my laptop. The follow on 10-year DVD seems to have embedded coding that does not allow the contents to be uploaded.
I’m curious if by “uploaded” you mean imaged/mounted, or actually copied the files from the CD onto the hard drive. I mentioned imaging the disc earlier as a way to run the software without having to carry around a portable CD drive; if that’s not even an option…oooof…very, very limited use product.
Has anyone accessed the Zinio app after their subscription has lapsed? Is it possible to access the old magazines that were part of your paid subscription, or is the alternative to just download them all before the subscription lapses and then keep that iPad in a special place until it dies?
I have old scale auto and FSM magazines from several years ago that are still accessible on my zinio app and I have no current subscriptions with zinio. I use pocket mags now as it’s cheaper. That being said you can download them into Zinio cloud but not to your device. So yeah you never own your own copy.
Lastly I usually wait till November-December to get a subscription because there is usually a 25-45% discount. I get another model mag that is 12 issues a year and it’s like 20$ during the Black Friday sale.
I double checked what I have loaded on my laptop. It turns out I was able to load the 10-Year Collection 2008-2017 on to my laptop. Each issue is a PDF file that can be read, searched and printed as required. I am not sure how I did this but it couldn’t be difficult because I am in no way talented with respect to IT. The instructions are clear that the contents cannot be loaded onto a tablet or a cell phone. The 25-Year Collection instructions indicate that the contents can be uploaded to a desktop computer so that the disks are not necessary to access the content. I did this at some point in the distant past but did not reload the contents when I upgraded my laptop a few years back. I would say that I copied the files from the disks to my laptop as I do not believe I know how to either image or mount the disks to transfer their contents to my laptop. Sorry I cannot be more helpful…
There are a few ways to get it to a mobile device if you wanted, you could download the files to an Apple iCloud account if you have it, from your laptop, then download it from iCloud to the device. I do this for service manuals at work all the time. Also you could put the files on a thumb drive, get an adapter and plug the drive into your tablet or phone and download it to your device. I do this often as well.
