Typical, just putting the finishing touches to my Tamiya Beaufighter and bang…glue gets over the inside of the front cockpit window due to my hamfistedness! I’ve thought about using toothpaste to try and polish the glue off the clear plastic, but is that a good way to do it and are there any other ways to eliminate the stain completely?
Phantom,
What kinda glue did you use ? I usually use white glue for canopies. If it’s white glue I’d just carefully scratch it off with my fingernail. If it’s a solvent glue, I’d wait for a long time till it cured before I used any kind of polishing stick or compound on it.
Chris
Try a little Future on the glue spot. I can’t guarantee it will work but I’ve used this technique to remove fogging from canopies in the past.
Good luck
Sorry to jump in here and piggy back… but I just mangled a canopy by using Goo Gone to get rid of stray paint (enamel), ended up fogging the whole thing, Future peeling off in layers… left it overnight in windex, still looks bad… gave it a coat of future, still looks foggy, letting it cure for a day… I also gave it a xfine sanding and buffing, see if that made a difference (before Future). Any suggestions for me? ![]()
It’s the usual plastic glue I always use ( Humbrol polystyrene cement ). As you can imagine - because this type of glue welds plastic, it’s permanently marked the clear plastic. It should have dried by now.
Unfortunately I think you will find that you will have to attack it with wet and dry then polish it. The Humbrol glue is pretty nasty stuff if put in the wrong place. I would also suggest that you leave it to dry for a few days prior to attacking it.
Yep, wet/dry all the way to 1200 grit or finer and then Future. Next time, you’ll probably use use white glue.
Thanks guys! I’ll give those things a go. I did try using I think it was Humbrol Clearfix a while back but it didn’t stick the plastic at all so I went back to using normal plastic glue.
I’ll double-dip the canopy in future, then sand the future off the edges with a quick pass of a sanding stick. Then I glue it on with liquid cement. It lets me have the bond of the liquid cement, without having to worry about the cement eating anything I don’t want it to… But I also use clear parts cement, but I don’t like it usually because you can’t sand it.
