I was thinking of getting a second P-39 and the one I have does not have a mask. I have the Eduard P-400 weekend edition and was considering another Eduard or the Accurate Miniatures P-400. Thanks.
I’ve not had much luck reusing the Eduard Masks. The stick again for the most part except for that inevitable corner that you pulled it off with the first time around.
Canopy masks? You’re kidding, right?
The answer is NO, they are a one time use only… BUT you CAN use the left-over’s to use as a template to make your own masking from a strip of vinyl or masking tape. I have done this many times with good sucess.
Come on Hammer, be nice. Some of us have actually used canopy masks before.
You should spring for a Profipack kit at least once just to see what it feels like to have all those goodies in one box. You might never go back to older kits again. I’m not being serious of course but some of us do like all the little bells and whistles even though we’ll get the same enjoyment from building (maybe the word is carving) an old Lindberg X-3 from time to time.
(Shameless plug inserted here…My Build Article on the Lindberg X-3 will appear in the January issue of Scale Aircraft Modelling.)
AirMaster, That’s a great idea to use the old masks as a template. I’ve done it for years with xeroxed camo patterns as templates to cut masking tape with and never gave a though about reusing masks for the same process. Thanks
not trying to be rude or anything but that would have to be a NO BRAINER [:O]
I’m not offended by any responses, just asking a question albeit dumb. Hans, how do you paint your canopies? I did think about using the mask for a template. Thanks.
Mostly freehand, but for some I use masking or Scotch tape if I’m gonna spray the canopy installed. I’ve used liquid masking stuff as well, but I don’t care for the stuff… Micro-Mask, I think it was called…
No it’s not really a no brainer because it ALMOST works to reuse them. It’s just that one corner that gets messed up when you grab it with a tweezers to pull it free after painting. Using them as templates is a teriffic idea. Most of the time I take the cheap route which is to use Monokote adhesive trim sheets (they come is chrome or gold but either works great) much muich much cheaper that Bare metal foil and the stuff works fantastic.
Hans, I have free handed many of my canopies too which is why I want to use masks! LOL! I bought a mask for my P-400 that’s on the bench and ordered two more P-39 kits that come with mask and nose weight.
90% of the kits I build are so old mask are not available - I use Badger Foto/Frisket Film and make my own. You can find this product at most Hobby , Craft or Art Supply Stores.
LOL… I can identify with that… Especially after the third cuppa Joe… I use acryllics then, so I can scrape the paint off the glass, lol…
I use paraffin, works real well as long as you burnish the corners properly. Great idea on using masks as templates… I have been experimenting with using PE as a template, with wine bottle foil as the receiving agent for stuff like seatbelts.
You talkin’ about Parafilm-M? I tried that stuff and never had any luck with it until a thread in here showed up on how to use it… “I thought DAMN! THAT’S what I did wrong with it!” Now I can’t find it anywhere… Go figger…
yep, Parafilm-M is the trade name and basically only one you get “over the counter”. couple non-medical supply places sell it, i think MicroTools (sp?) used to carry it. you have to stretch it till it gets a tad “clear” and burnish. No glue or stickiness, ergo, no residue left behind.
i iuse tamiya tape. my hands shake way to bad to free hand canopys.
