I know it is obviously a designated time when multiple people build a certain type of armor at the same time, but what else happens? do you send in pics and it is over or anything else?
It is a joint activity between members of the forum where they build specific type of models within a specified period of time. The purpose of this is to basically increase the interest towards the build because of the interaction between those who are participating in the group build and the exchange of information regarding kits,parts, problems, progress, tools, methods as well as historical data related to the build.
While the concept of group builds has already evolved, its best form IMHO is still when the subject is very specific because it is in this case where the exchange of ideas and interaction is really taken advantaged of by everybody.
Posting pictures of the model while the build is going along is just a way where one can show his/her progress and present his/her work for scrutiny. This is a good way to show areas where problems have been detected or can be detected by others. This can lead to suggestions of how to correct the problems and bring awareness to others who are building the same kit. So it can also be said that in the group build everybody is watching everybody elses work.
Yea, what Dwight said and I will add: I’m in 2 going on right now (Russian, Vacuform Aircraft, and Halftrack starts in 5 days). From my experience, which isn’t much, here are what I think is good about them:
(1) THERE ARE NO GROUP BUILD POLICE!!! [:D][:D][;)][;)]
meaning things are relaxed, not many strict rules, just join and build
(2) You get cool badges
(3) You get motivatied to build more than 2 models a year (my normal rate)
(4) You get to tell the wife unit you have to buy AM parts because of the “Group”
(5) cool badges
