I hope your tongue gets better before you go to Rucker! By the way, when are you going?
I had mentioned this to you in another post, that must have slipped by, but I was going to let you in on a FANTASTIC place to eat about .5 miles outside the Daleville Gate on the left, “McLin’s”. It sits back off the main road, but has a big sign that’s very visible.
It’s only open a couple evenings a week (opens a 4pm I think), but plan on getting there early or you’ll be standing in line a long time!
In the picture, I was second one there this day around 3:15, but by 4pm, there’s no more parking places and people standing in line out into the parking lot.
I first visited there while on a teaching assignment for 6 months in 1978 at the “71P” school, and even then, thought it was THE best food I’d ever swallowed! Didn’t get back in that area until 1999, low & behold, McLin’s was still there, still under the same ownership, and suprisingly, discovering my memory of the place hadn’t been inflated over the years, it was STILL as good as it comes! Best Fried Chicken on the green hills of Earth!

Barry Ellis was commenting on the 16 hits just taken while pulling out of a “Gun Run” during operations early in Tet '68. 6 hours later that day, Barry lost his left eye and nose when a bullet richocheid off one of the Armored Seats. He was evac’d to Japan, and today, one must look real close because the reconstructive surgery was so successful.
Glad to hear that things worked out so well for him!

I’m going to commission in 2005. Right now I’m weaving my way around Army bureaucracy and regs to get my butt in a flight slot. Seems that I’m too “old” to go directly into the Aviation branch. So I’ve got a unit, the state aviation officer has said they’ll take me on as an aviation-branched officer, but there’s still lots of hoops for me to jump through. I think I may end up being a cav-scout platoon leader for a year before I get to go to Apache training. Good thing is, an SIP in the unit can train me to fly, so I may never even get to go to Rucker. I’m learning all of this at a rapid pace, so stuff may change at any second. I will, however, be flying Apaches sometime within the next three years.
I’ll keep everyone in the loop as to my status. I’ll be taking the AFAST test next month and will do a flight physical shortly thereafter. Should be a piece of cake.

I need to scratchbuild a Whiskey cockpit, but I don’t have any references. I lost the cockpit assembly to my MRC Super Cobra, and the Verlinden detail set isn’t available here in the Philippines. I need dimensions, layout guide, the works…if there’s anybody who knows of any 1:35 scale plans I would appreciate the assist. Thanks!

Save yourself a lot of time and frustration. Check out the Cobra Company’s website. They have a “Whiskey” Snake update/cockpit set that is
absolutely first rate.

Thanks for the heads-up, I’ll do that. I read about Verlinden’s cockpit set and it seems that this update kit needs a little more work itself.

I was in a similar position back in '97. Had a slot to fly Apaches with 1/135, MO NG. Aced the AFAST and my package made it all the way to Guard Bureau at the Pentagon who decided I’d be too old by the time they could get me to Rucker. Hope things work out better for you.
