Got my Type 90 in braille scale, and it’s a really nice kit. Problem is that there’s no English text on the painting and decal details. Can someone tell me what the below says? What color are the tanks that have the Japanese flag on them?
Even more important, does this text say what the colors TC-07 and TC-08 actually are? They are the main hull colors on most of these tanks, but there’s no English text to say what they are. Thanks.
Following is a black and white scan version of the color page with the decals and paint schemes. Click on it to make it bigger.
Larry, I can’t read Japanese for sqat! But I’ve got a bit of experience w/ the kits so I’ll give it a shot to try & answer your question. Chris or Brian will probably beat me anyway! LOL - Calvin
Here’s a rough translation for you (I left all my dictionaries in Japan while I’m home in the States visiting my family, so this is just off the top of my head!):
Use the following as you choose_ _ 69 Example of use_
National FlagSide Training Number * Apply Side Training Number decal to sheet plastic of similar thickness, then attach to turret
Refer to the color guide for placement of each vehicle’s specific number, unit assignment, and other detailed markings.
Basic tank colors are sold in a set called “Mr. Color Tank Color Set No. 1 (JGSDF Colors).” The set includes: TC07 Dark Green 3414, TC08 Brown 3606, and TC09 Olive Drab 2314. This tank uses colors TC07 and TC08.
There ya go! So TC07 and TC08 are the two-tone dark green and brown camo colors you need to use on the Type 90.
No specific mention of colors for tanks with the national flag applied, but as those flags are just slapped on for parades and other events, the normal colors should be fine.
The little 1/144 Kaiyodo Type 90 series included one all-green vehicle with the national flag, but I’ve never seen any evidence of such a vehicle other than that. Entirely possible, I suppose, but I’ve never seen one.
The flag does indeed go on the turret. In most examples I’ve seen, it’s the only marking on the turret. I’ve seen some with the flag and the vehicle number, though. No unit symbol.
As far as Tamiya paint matches go…hmmm…the Tamiya Type 90 kit gives mixing ratios for their colors in the instruction sheet. Mine’s in Japan, though, so I can’t check it until after April 22.
Anyone else got one for Larry?
All the Type 90s I’ve seen are in the two-tone dark green and brown camo scheme. I don’t know if “dark green” is the same as “JSDF green,” but aside from the 1/144 Kaiyodo Type 90 pre-painted model, I’ve never seen a monotone Type 90. Of course, that doesn’t mean such a vehicle doesn’t exist, it just means I haven’t seen one! [;)]
I don’t read Japanese, but here is a link to a site that has scans of Tamiya Instructions. You can get the decal placement and painting portions of the directions here. Click on Color. These are the painting and decal portions. Shows Tamiya color guide and painting/decal pages of directions, all in English, Japanese, and looks like German.
Edit: Just looked and colors listed in painting area are not on the paint color guide. That figures. Still lists them by Tamiya color #s though, XF-72 and XF-73.
