Calling All Michael Wittmann Buffs

Yesterday I posted about the new DML “Wittmann’s Last Tiger” limited edition #007 late model. I had assumed this was the Villers Bocage Tiger I that Wittmann used with such devastating effect against the Brittish “Desert Rats” on June 13, 1944. While surfing the net I came upon threads that indicate the actual unit number from Ab 101 is somewhat of a mystery. It seems there is a debate as to whether his mount was number 222 or 212. There is fairly persuasive evidence that MW comandeered another mount other than his assigned 205 prior to the engagement. Some witnesses say MW switched to “Sowa’s tank” before the fight. Sowa was assigned 222 but an after action photo has been interpreted as 222 towing another T I, 231. By process of elimination, some commentators have asserted 212 was the mount. The discussion threads ended in 2006. Is there any new data out there to resolve the controversy
