My partents have been travelling out West and sent me the coolest souveneir: a panel from a North American F-86 sabre. I’ve identified it as the final version…the “H” as it is the 4 cannon version. Fortunately I have the Starboard (Edited…thanks Lufberry) side cannon access panel. Needless to say, I’m very excited and already planning a display, model options (most likely I’ll do it in 1/32 (Hasegawa) with the C&H resin conversion) to be determined.
I’ve been doing some extensive research on the web the last few days, but I can’t come up with the markings. The blue sections on the panel are most likely the “E” in Air Force.
Would any of you experts out there be able to point me in the right direction as to which scheme this was? My father thinks Arizona ANG, but so far I don’t find any matches. I’ve found a tail # 0-31355 that looks like a possibilty but it’s black and white.
Whoa!!
How cool is that!!!
Sorry mate - can’t help with the A/C unit or designation, but I’d like to ask of you would post pics of the panel when you finally restore it and have it on display.
Good deal - it sure does look like the starboard panel off an F-86H.
I guess that is, indeed, a must-have book! I’d like to get a close look at the cover. That’s not NMF is it?
Lee:
I don’t think I’ll tamper (yet) with the panel. I’ll leave it as is (for now). I’m hoping to use it as either the base, or as a background, for a 1/32 sclae model.
There’s a guy in my club that is the absolute Sabre expert!! He literally wrote the book on the F-86. Several books actually. I’m sure he’ll be interested in your piece. I’m positive he can answer any question you may have. Will e-mail his address.
CobraFan: Thank you…I’ve literally spent hundreds of hours on the website. Very insightful and resourceful…thank you.
Jerry: Yes, please do forward his info. My dad was pumped up to find it , and I’m equally excited to receive this neat piece of history. It will be fun to try to track down which markings were on the plane. I should receive some other photos from my father when he returns from Arizona this week. I will also try to contact he location where he found it to see if a tail number or serial number remain. I’d be very interested in learning a few things from your friend.
