72cuda, or anyone else who reads this and knows. The pic below is that of a Gau8 from an A-10. I’m trying to reproduce the colors of this thing as close as possible. With that, I’, trying to identify the metal here.
Starting from the right: The first subassembly which is black or dark gray, I assume is cast iron or at least a cast part which is painted. The next two components I’m not too sure. They both seem to have the consistancy of unpainted cast iron, but the fact they are two different colors is throwing me. It also doesn’t appear to me to be unpainted aluminum. Brushed steel or aluminum maybe?
the ammo feed belt may be steel. the electric motor looks like cast aluminum and the larger cast part (near the center) looks like magnesium to me. it looks cast and painted or plated. these are guesses on my part. I don’t know much about A-10’s. if it is any help i’m glad. sorry if it is not. Bob
Hey Bones;
Sorry for not checking in sooner but I was on my way back to the good Ole US of A, after a 26 hour plane trip and half way around the world flying was a major pain in the butt,
well let me get started, I’ll be going from Lt to Rt the item that is pointed down is the gun breach drive shaft and it’s dark steel with a orange boot, below the shaft is the Hyd Gun Drive Motor it’s black or dk steel, Rt of that is the Gun Gear Drive Box Valve Adapter its annodized yellow but this one has gun gas burns, then closer to us is the Gun Gear Drive Box and is black or dk aluminum, to the Rt of the adapter is the Gun Safing Valve it depends on the overhauler but most are black or gun metal (or Dk Steel), a good color to use on weathering after you paint them their new colors would be Gunmetal & Steel,
And sorry again for not responding as my usual self but I’m very happy to be Home with my own computer

thanks Sled;
I got 14 days off and then back to the coal mine, but I’ll be smiling every step of the way, but we still have our people still there so I’ll breathe easier when they get home too

72cuda,
Thanks for doing what you’re doing over there. The world will be a better place as a result.
Enjoy the time off - you’ve earned it! Hope you have time to build something while you’re home.
Paul
I’ll give a couple of guesses - the light gray object on the left is probably a gear box, and is probably made of a magnesium alloy - the part to the right of that (aluminum color) is probably a reduction gear box (aluminum alloy composition) - to the right of that is the hydraulic motor (blue grey) which is painted steel, they also can be found painted black, light blue and grey - to the right of that is the hydraulic control valve for the system (light grey ) - it’s an aluminum alloy with its surface anodized - the two yellow circles on the valve are plastic plugs which seal the unit until the hydraulic pressure and fitting (the smaller hole) and the return line and fitting (the larger hole) are installed.
hey Bob
good guesses and you are most likely right by the material used, all I know is the components by name and their colors and job they do but that’s about it, I really don’t work the weapons systems only to help the Loaders in T/Sing problems but I’m the nosey one wondering about the plane seeing what parts are & do just in case I’m needed to help T/S the systems
