C-5A vs C-5B?

Hey all,

What is the difference between the 1/144th scale C-5A and the C-5B made by Revell, Otaki or any other make?

By looking at the box I’m guessing different decals, but what else?

Also what is the difference between the Revell and Otaki kits? Decals? Molds? Better lines?

Thanks! [:D]

The plastic is the same in both kits, I have had both. Perhaps someone will correct me, but I think all of the changes from A to B are internal. My Otaki C-5A is has decals for the early white top/grey bottom, the Revell I think was in the Grey scheme. There are aftermarket decals for the AMC grey scheme with Travis markings, from skydecals@bigpond.com. Ronin is the brand.

I already got a pair of decal sets, Steve hooked me up with a set in no-time! Good old Travis AFB is only an hour or two from my house. I can see their C-5s and KC-135s every so often. [:D] (I still need to pick up a KC-135 to make a refueling diorama!)

On the real Galaxy’s I believe the wings are a bit heavier/thicker/longer and a few antennas are changed.

I ended up picking up both kits, I figured I’ll build two, sell one and keep the other.

The Revell C-5B shows the two tone green and the C-5A shows the two tone grey.

I guess I’ll see what I get in the mail next week. [dinner]

Has anyone ever tried to add guts to one? I’ll see if my AN-124-100 guts might fit or work inside, if that’s the case I may have some fun with mine!

You must be pretty close to me, Eddie, I am in Woodland.

Back in the early 1990s when I was involved with the C-5 Galaxy, there was only one easy way to visually identify the A & B models other than looking at the serial numbers.

There is small blade antenna located on the underside of the nose visor just ahead of the separation break. On the A model, this antenna is sweptback and on the B model it is rectangular. I believe that most C-5s have received more antennas since then and I have not kept up with the A & B model differences.

And, as others have pointed out, all 1/144 C-5 kits (Revell, Entex, Testors, etc.) are reissues of the original early 1970s Otaki kit.

Woodland is still pretty far north of me, past Sac.

I’m on my way down near Stockton.

Still pretty close!

So do you know of any good modeler or prototype meets up this way in the near future?

The next one I know of is in Yuba City in July, I think bombers are the theme. I’ll e-mail you with the details if you are interested. I spent a lot of time in the 60’s in Stockton, in the NG helicopter unit there.

Bombers eh?

Lets see… would a F/A-18E with a set of paveways count as a bomber? LOL I guess I don’t have anything that fits. Oh well!

Keep me updated with any group meet. I’d like to go to one just to go.

Thanks again buddy!
