C-5 Galaxy, Where art thou?

I think as we all know, that Luciphen Harpress (sorry if I spelled that) has his Spruce Goose. It seemed to take him not only forever and a day to find one, but it seems to be taking just as long as to build it, granted the plane is HUGE! One of my all time wanted-to-build-kits, is the C-5 Galaxy. My only problem is finding one, granted I dont want to go Ebaying for it. Does anyone know where I could possibly find one? My largest built has been the 1/48 Monogram B-17G, Next up is my 1/72 B-52 ( notice the size keeps getting bigger [}:)] ) and I would like to build a C-5 Galaxy. Any help would be most appreciated

There is supposedly, I believe, a 1/144 vacuform of the “Aluminum Cloud,” but its a very rare one to find. Good luck and good hunting.

The only C-5 in 1:72 out there is made by Glenn Ashley of Delta models, however i have researched him and he likely has never produced one, but he does take your money for it…beware of this fraud!

I have a 1/72 scale vac kit of the C-5, originally produced by ID Models, and then later by Delta models as far as I can tell (same mold, rumor has it). So it exists, but good luck finding one now given the currrent state of Delta models.

If you’re willing to do 1/144, there have been a few kits from different manufacturers (from the same mold as far as I can tell) in the past. Here’s a couple of old threads on it:

Funny you should mention C-5. I just picked up the 1/144 Otaki kit still in sealed bags at a local swap meet two days ago for $35. Like you, I have been looking for this kit for years. Now that I have it I can’t bring myself to open the bags! I have all kinds of thoughts-- to build the kit as it is, to make resin copy which I will build and keep the original or not even open it. It’s crazy! By the way, if I was to make a resin copy of any kit and then sell a build plane with some modifications will I be violating any copyright laws?

B.

Yeah. Generally speaking, making any copies of kit parts is a violation of copyright. Modelers get away with making resin copies of kit parts because they don’t sell them.

The issue is a little more complicated, but that’s the gist.

Regards,

oldmoelkits.com/vacs.html has an ID Models 1/72 lockheed C-5 Galaxy for $325 scroll down until you get to the I’s.

This link works

That is about double what it was.

I think some one from the Magazine with some pull and some members that Live in the UK need to look into what exactly is going on with Delvac Models.

Maybe there is nothing ???

It surpises me that there are not many out there that have built the kit they have - are they affraid of all that work and see how different the fuselage really is…

read Paul’s article on the C-5 kit to see what I’m talking about.

I could swear I remember seeing a 1/72 C-5 made by Testors about 10-15 years ago. Anybody else remember this or I am I just loosing my mind?

Not really - it doesn’t look like that much more work than any other vac kit, except it’s bigger. I haven’t started mine yet because of a lot of other projects and a lack of space to display it. I’ve solved the latter through careful negotiation with the wife (i.e. she gets new kitchen cabinets and a new stove, and I get to turn a spare bedroom into display space for large models). For the former, I figure it’ll be sometime in 2008 before I get to the C-5 given everything I’m working on now or plan to start pretty soon.

I remember Testors C-5 also, the box was huge. I’m not sure of the scale.

According to the John Burns bible, PAK-20, 1/72nd kits of the C-5 were produced as vacumforms in 1/72nd by Challenge (an Italian firm) and ID Models. 1/144 kits were produced by Otaki(Yodel) and Revell(Testors) in injection form. Various other kits in off beat, very small scales were produced by several other small firms.

Richard

I think academy of minicraft made a very small scale (1/288?) C-5, I remember seeing that box.

Academy has C-5 in 1/480 scale…

Otaki/Revell are the same kit, repacked. I’ve seen one or two and they look pretty good. Of course, this 1/144 is about the same size as a 1/72 B-52. I have never, if more than 25 years of attending contests, seen a 1/72 C-5, however, I do see the real things on an almost daily basis and even SWMBO recognizes the sound as they are in final approach to Westover. .

The same problem with the fuselage on the 1/144th kit too.- it looks like they used the 1/144th kit to make the 1/72nd kit.-just made the difference more noticeable.

The kit I have (since 99) has been cut up trying to make it right-that is why I’m making new items to solve that. Jus making some equipment to handle large sheets of plastic

I agree with you on not seeing one at any show…HHHhhmm

I.have a C5 as small as 1/700th.

Daniel

I have the Testors hanging in my model room, I think it must be 1/144. I threw out the box , as it was a flimsy box. Its not a huge model. This fine aircraft could benefit a larger scale though, I would love to see it happen. The Testors is not bad but its small. The tires are about 1/4 of an inch or so. I built it about 15 years ago. I don’t have a digital camera yet or I would post it. I’m still a film purist.

The chap who runs Delta models is named glenn Ashley. There are a few of us, customers of Mr. Ashley who are seriously considering taking him to the magistrates court in the UK…as you can tell, we are not satisfied customers, in one case, one chap waited 4 years and never received his C-5. Ashley also put off many larger retailers and manufacturers as he never paid his bills. Contact me for more info…but avoid Delta Models…
