I bought the AFV Club Nashorn when it came out and ordered the update kit for it as well. I got the update kit or as AFV Club calls it “Detail Up Kit” the other day and went through it this morning to see what was better than in the Nashorn kit. The suggested retail price in dollars is $21.00 but the kicker is,there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the kit that doesn’t come in the Nashorn kit to start with.
Same PE,same string and the same sprues. Unless you destroy your kit parts and need replacements,save your money.
That’s exactly what it is for, fixing issues in say the Dragon kit for example. Much like AFV Clubs Stryker detail set, their German half track pioneer assault bridges set, suspension set, track set etc.
These are all comprised of parts that already come in AFV Club kits but not other manufacturers kits, or more often the case, they are simply considered more accurate than other manufacturers parts.
Sorry to hear you didn’t get what you thought you were unca’ Tony but if you still have another kit in the stash you can use it with that one.

In Tony’s defense though, I don’t believe it says anything like that on the box. I guess I just remember when they released their Stryker weapon set because it was superior to Trumpeters and I have their Sturmbrucke pioneer assault bridges set because Dragons are out of scale.
Those sprues are already in the AFV kits so they aren’t intended for use with their own kits by default but they should say so on the box and I don’t believe they do.
I see the problem, you did not read the lower left of the box top. I beat this says “Hey, Tony, not for AFV kit”.
So now you need to take a Chinese (?) reading class and you will be good to go.
Maybe Kalmbach can put out a book on understand foreign languages on box tops, instruction sheets, model parts, etc. They could name it “The Bilingual Modeler”
I too learned something new from this thread and will keep it in mind when considering AFV Club parts for use on other builds. [:)] Sorry to hear it wasn’t quite what you were expecting Tony, the box top pic reminds me of the approach that Voyager has with their sets…always have to be real careful with those in terms of exactly what is, and isn’t, included.
Honest mistake Tony. You probably had a “Deer in the headlights” look when you first saw the detail set. Didn’t think a second and ordered it. It’s just in your nature to detail a kit with AM. [;)]

Tony, that really sucks, honestly. I would seriously write the company and tell them that you have alerted themodeling community on both here and Armorama as to this sleight-of-hand. You’d be surprised what results you can get by taking action sometimes?
I’d ask for my money back too.
In any case, I wasn’t even aware that Academy had a Nashorn. The detail set with the PE racks that I used for my Nashorn was the Verlinden one, and it’s a nice little kit i itself. Comes with a resin gun and a couple other pieces of PE details as well. You can get it on eBay, usually.
Along the same sentiments, but this is the danger of racing out to get AM for a kit just “because” it’s there.
Today, the vast majority of new kits on the shelf are just fine built out of the box.
AM was needed (or scratch building) when all we had were the older kits that had some molding technology limitations or you wanted to convert one version into a different variant.
Does that $45 panzer kit really need an additional $30, $40 or even $50 added to it with barrel, PE and tracks?
Probably not. It’s more a case of wanting to keep up with the Joneses.
