Buried Migs in Iraq......

Hi all !!!

I got these pics from my brother, and i thought they are pretty cool… apparently the Iraq’s buried this mig in the sand, and our troops uncovered it…

I just thought this may perhaps may make a good dioram…

hope you like…

It looks like a MIG 25 to me, god knows why they burried it. it can’t be to keep it secret because the USAF probably know every nut, bolt and rivet of that bird. Greg

this is the text that came with the pics…

Interesting photos of a MiG 25 buried in Iraq. Several MiG 25s and Su-25s
were discovered buried at al-Taqqadum Airfield, west of Baghdad. If they
went to that kind of trouble to hide fighter aircraft you have to wonder
what imaginative ways they could come up with to hide “other stuff”???

If ya’ll want a full story and more shots, go here.

Found this page sometime back and just grabbed the url without really looking at it too closely. I’d also found another page with more info but can’t find the URL at the moment.

Anyhoo, the other article stated that it was a previously unknown variant of the recce Foxbat. I dunno if I believe that, but the whole story is interesting nevertheless. I’d like to see some photos of the other jets they found buried, there were some 3 dozen or so, I guess. Crazy Iraqis…

Fade to Black…

I like the “Let’s Roll” written on the side of the truck. [:)] Did any one notice the one soldier without a shovel in all the pics 9Blackwolf’s link also in the bottom left corner of the last posted pic)? She must be a seargent or something [:D][:P]

Gee Whiz! You’ve got to wonder what that does to an airframe.

Why on earth would you pull the wings off a Foxbat and bury it in the desert? You really gotta think that Sandman was (is?) a real Fruit Loop. Freakin bizarre.
How airworthy could an airframe be after that kind of treatment?

Cool pics, thanks.

heres some more

Apparently some in the the Iraq Airforce mis-understood the order to ’ go underground ’ !

lol

Burying them sure beats being shot down on take-off. Apparently they never intended using them. Bought them for show of force to intimidate the neighbours. Probably didn’t even have pilots sufficiently trained to fly them. On the other hand, being in their shoes probably would have done the same. Would only have made sure that the sand doesn’t get in.

the planes in the pics i posted have been looted (maybe thats why they were buried)

that sand is tough on the airframe, but not as bad as a JDAM! (Or thieving looters)
Whoever it was that said these dolts are brave, has their own head in the sand!

Uncle Saddam never was a very bright fellow. I assume there had to be some logical reason for doing it, but it absolutely escapes me at the moment. Such a waste.

Does this mean we may be seeing new types in the air museums here? I hope so, I would love to do a model of a MiG-25 or Su-25!!!

I beleive some of the reasons why they buried the aircraft was:
1- Your DAMB right they didn’t want to get shot down right after takeoff.
2- Some of the Iraqi brass felt fighting the USA in the air was futile, and that Saddam’s regime would soon crumble. By buring them, the Iraqi’s would then have some part of a defensive air force once the war was over and the new government had taken power.

Its all part of deception isnt it?
NATO was bombing rubber and canvas tanks and migs in serbia during kossovo crisis, so the poor fellas thought that this might also work…sure.
