Who here is very passionate about a certain ship, tank, aircraft, etc. where throughout your life you only ever build just that subject only, even all the variants of that subject?
I don’t think I’ve ever come across anybody like that except for one modeler who has built a lot of B-17 bombers. Different variants and color schemes.
I’m starting to get the same way almost. I love the Iowa class battleships and I like building then. But I don’t want to get burned out by building so many of them and/or my building of them to “take priority” over me wanting to build other types/subjects of models.
Already, I’ve built a 1990’s what if refurbished USS Iowa battleship. First pic below.
Second pic below is my what if future USS Wisconsin railgun battleship.
Third pic below is a Iowa battleship converted to aircraft carrier.
Fourth pic below is 6 more Iowa class battleship hulls I’m not even sure yet what to do with.
So as you can see, I’m “stuck” on building Iowa class battleships.
I build multiples of the same given subject, but there is no one all encompassing subject. And there is always some difference between any two.
M113 family
I simply don’t have the hobby time to build like that,so I build different subjects,However like most of us,I have built a few different variants
Tiger I early
Tiger I late
Tiger II Henschel w/zimm
Tiger II Henschel BoB version
Early Jagdtiger
Late Jagdtiger
Early Jagdpanther
Late Jagdpanther
Panther A D and G
Panzer IV 3 Variants
Jagdpanzer IV 3 Variants
T-34 and T-34/85
3 different Shermans
I have almost every version of F-4 phantom including the Israeli
RF-4E(S) equipped with the HIAC camera.
Annnnnd…just about every version of my favorite jet, F-104 Starfighter including the NF-104A.
Ever since I watched the F-104 “High Flight” tv station sign off as a kid I was hooked.
I actually fondled a natural metal (highly polished) German F-104G in U.S. markings from Luke A.F
B. while I was stationed at George A.F.B.
I like your carrier conversion! Did you follow the proposed plan for the Illinois/Kentucky, or were you just inspired by them? I’ve thought about this conversion for one of my 1/1200 wargame-scale kits.
this truly speaks volumes about patience and attention to detail. I am simply in awe about your vast production of “same” models. This truly shows true passion in modeling.
I can’t take the whole credit for the Iowa carrier conversion. A friend I know started building the model a long time ago. But he only got maybe about 60% complete or so and then he gave up on it. He gave it to me as a gift back in 2016 during a model club meeting. I finished the other 40% or so which was the aircraft, painting, decals, armament, and finer details.
I’m assuming he got information from Garzke & Dulin’s “BATTLESHIPS” book.
The only OFFICIAL schematic that exists of this conversion is below. No other information or drawings exist to the best of my knowledge and searching.
Well I’m new, and slow, so I haven’t had a chance to build multiple of the same subject yet but…
I am working on an F-4ej Kai right now and have two other versions (S and J) . I’ve also got a couple of AH-1 cobras in the stash, and will have three harriers once I build everything so I think I’m mixed. I like a variety but seem to have a few favorites that I’ll be building multiple of.
Once I finish the F-86 and F-4 that are in progress, I will certainly look for something completely different to experience next. Right now I’m leaning towards a helicopter or a P-38.
Building the same battleship over and over would risk burnout for me, but that’s just me. Battleships would take me a year at my slow pace.
It’s not an obsession - I can stop any time I want to - but I enjoy building 1/48 Phantoms. Since restarting modeling in 2016 I have completed:
1-Eduard/Academy
1- Hasegawa
1-Tamiya
1- Academy
9- Zoukei-Mura
I my stash:
3- Zoukei-Mura
1-Revell (unlikely to ever be built)
2- Hasegawa (unlikely to ever be built)
1- Meng
After completing my P-47C, I am starting on Meng’s F-4E 2020 “Terminator”.
I’ll certainly pop for Airfix’s newly announced Phantom F.G.1 which will immediately go top-shelf for my next build.
Keavdog,
I have seen the anniversary decals but didn’t buy them. Meng’s kit decals include three marking options, one 70th NATO anniversary, one 60th Phantom anniversary and one 100th year squadron anniversary. All are nice options, but I am leaning towards the 60th Phantom for my build.
I’ve got so many models on my list of “want to build” that I don’t think I’ll ever get around to duplications of any given subject. Kudos to those of you who can! My guiding principal is to build the best possible example of a model that I can, and move on to the next one on the wish list.
