Older paintings and drawings of galleons do seem to show forward rake on foremast and normal rake on mizzen, with mainmast either no rake or only slight back rake.
Mark, Don is right on that as far as this model goes. I have the furled sails on the fore & main mast & a lot of rigging done. At 87 the rigging was too hard for me & my eyes were giving me trouble too, so I just took the sails off & I do like it with the furled sails. I think your HIS sails wll be a lot better, but the rigging between the masts is harder with sails. I am anxious to see your pictures Mark.
Hi Gene, your Galleon is looking great! I finally finished my Soleil Royal and after 2 hrs of trying to figure out how to (between my wife and I) get these pictures on the forum, we gave up.Cant figure out how to get them from post image to this forum.I have also started on my Revell Galleon and want to send those pictures also. Thanks,Mark
Hi Mark.
I’d be happy to give you advice.
Send me a private message and we can work it.

These are the finished pictures of my Spanish Galleon.
Mark,
That is some oustanding modeling to say the least! Well done.
Steve
I’ll say , beautiful work mark ,
Mark, The cloth sails are a great plus. How did you get them to billow-out so nice?
Also, Really nice detail with the added crew and excellent painting.
Thanks for asking about the rake on the masts. Your Masts “rake” matches the old paintings and sure adds some realism to what had been considered one of Revells “Art Decorations”.
Nino
P.S. You did great getting the Pictures on this post. (I know, GM helped.)
Hi Nino, thanks for the kind words, and thanks to all of you on the forum. You know Gene is the one who tweeked me on this ship! I loved all the colors! These sails came from HiS model.I got them because I liked the color and the insignias on them but they were a bear. I’ve worked with cloth sails but not to this extent. To get them to billow I installed small wire around the bottom and both sides of the sail by cutting the wire at an angle to shape it like a needle and "sewed"them in the very tiny hem around the perimeter so you could bend them at whatever angle or curve you wanted but I couldn’t keep the cloth from sagging so I tried several methods of spray to stiffen them and finally got lusterless flat clear laquer spray to work the best- it stiffens right up after about a half an hour. I tried spray varnish, starch, hairspray etc. This is the first ship I’ve seen with masts that are racked forward and backward but found that because of the angle of the preformed ratlines they wouldn’t have worked any other way but “out of plumb”.This one was time consuming but a lot of fun. Thanks Gene for the inspiration! I’m still having trouble getting pictures on here.It took us an hour last night to get them on here, did the same thing we did last time but it wouldn’t work.
That is very nice, and the rigging looks good.
Thanks Bill, I’m going to work on that putting sails on the yard that you sent me.I have tried to install those parrels for the masts but there is no room on these plastic ships,I wonder if it’s different for the wooden ones? The plastic ones even on the Soleil Royal have no room for them. I have the Victory and the Constitution to do so I will see if they work there. Thanks,Mark
Hi.
the ship looks nice.
But also, this ship, despite its labeling as “Spanish Galeon”, looks more like the smaller English counterparts that had only three masts (the Spanish galeons were in general larger, and much taller, had four masts - two with the lateen sail). This ship here reminds me distantly for the Golden Hind or the Revenge (of Sir Francis Drake).
What I recognize is, that it seems the design of one and the same model ship circulates among many model kit companies, but they bring out the same kit under different names to avoid doing all the same.
Mark, your ship is beautiful & I love the sails. How in the world did I miss it. This is the first I have seen it. You really made a winner with that model. I did have a lot of problems last September so that is probably why.
Thanks Gene, you started it with your model that you so elequintly put together. It was a very fun build
I am starting to work on building the Revell 1/96 Spanish Galleon and I have a question, the paint list has two Reds Fiery Red and Purple Red, but in the instructions it lists only red without defining which one. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks
