Building the 54cm Morser Karl (lot of pictures)

Here is my build of the Hasegawa 1/72 kit for the 54cm Morser Karl kit. This is my first attempt with weathering detail. I have to thank the Doog for advice on this! It took about a week of my vacation time off and on. A bit of time invested…Too much if you ask my wife. Any comment or suggestions are appreciated. Again, it’s my first shot at something like this!!! This thing is tiny…

I kept screwing up the pictures…I wanted to add I didn’t get the figures painted in time for the contest later this morning at Hobby Town. Those little Nazis were pretty small!!! There was a bit of flash on some of the parts and there were a TON of parts left over. I guess they were for a separate kit of the other 60cm Morser…I figure later on I’ll build some type of diorama for it. Again, BIG thanks to the Doog for advice on this…I didn’t go with a camo pattern because I didn’t want to take a chance at making a mess of it. Hope you understand!!! Thanks again for taking the time to look at it!!!

Hi,

Great looking build. How was it? What were the tracks li, typical Hasegawa efforts or have they been improved? I’ve been looking at this kit for ages wondering whether to buy or not to buy. It certainly looks impressive. Well done.

Rich

Looks like you are off to a great start! Here’s my 1/72 “Thor”

In the year I’ve been on these boards I hadn’t seen this one posted until now.

Looks great!

Guess that’s a hint I better get crackin on mine for the same GB you’re in, huh?

The kit was fun but taxing…There were a million tiny parts that required using tweezers most of the time and the railings were time consuming and required a ton of patience (of which I’m short on) and super glue!!! The tracks were the one piece rubber links. The large ones were actually a tad too bit and the small ones were too small. Had to stretch them as for as I coud without tearing them. That was the only “fit” problem. It’s pretty hard getting those to look real. I rough painted them rust, then gunmetal with some brown and flat black. I didn’t muddie it up too much, figuring the thing was too big to too far off road. I did figure it would get pretty grimey from being on a railcar and then the mix of grease and gunpowder so I used the Tamiya powders for a mud and gunmetal weather. Thnaks for the comments!!!

Don, that was the one for the group build!!! I got itching to do it so I just started it and figured to something else for the GB!! Let me know how yours goes. I was too afraid to try the camo pattern shown on the box!!! [:-^]

Looks great so far Stephen! Keep it going and keep us posted! I’ll get around to mine someday. [:P]

When you’re finished, send me a photo if you’d like and I’ll post it here.

Just got back from the Hobby Town competition and won 1st place in Military/Armor Military group!!! [:D] Thanks!!

YeeHa!

I guess they didn’t fault you for your “lack of camo”! LOL

Congratulations- what a great way to start your day!

Don

congrats on the win.

It just so happens i won first in the Hobby Town contest today too. Ha![(-D] Looks great, I dig the camo and the munitions carrier.[tup]

I like very much, it’s a huge model even in 1/72.

Thanks for the compliment. It does seem pretty big for a 1/72 scale. I couldn’t imagine standing next to it when they fired it!!!
