Building T-72 variants.

Well, as soon as I get my M-84, I intend to make the series of the T-72 from the Early variant to the lastest available.

However, I might need some help on the colors, as in what colors they used. I know about the soviet green one, and the M-84 (Thanks for the help on that one, stikpusher, you’re a saint!) but as for the other armies that used it, I may run into some trouble. If anyone knows any colors from other armies (Iraqi and East German are the main questions as well as Eastern Euro like Polish and Czech) let me know. Yes I do have reference books, but they only help so much.

Advice and suggestions are ALWAYS welcome. As soon as I get them all done, I’ll see if I can put them up. Thanks for the advice and help.

That’s actually a good point you brought up. I always assumed that most countries that used T-72s purchased them from Russia, thus having the standard Russian Green scheme.

I like to know that there’s another T-72 lover out there!.. Well, I think for Czech T-72, the base color must be the same as the Russian versions, and I think the Polish T-72 must be painted with Tamiya’s Khaki Drab XF-51 or an equivalent, as their T-55s… BTW if you want to build all variants, I suggest you to build the most known variants: T-72 Ural, T-72G (Polish and Czech made T-72s), T-72M1, T-72M2 (it’s official dessignation isT-72B), T-72M2 w/ERA, T-72BM, T-72MP and T-72/120, and if you want, the further development, the T-90. For the first three tanks I named, there are lots of pics in Tanxheaven, you may also build other nacionalities T-72s, like the Finnish or Iraqi versions. In the Steven Zaloga’ book T-72 Main Battle Tank 1974-73 from Concord Publications you’ll found the differences between the different version, and lots of pictures for the comparison as well… If you want info for an especific camo scheme (like Moroqi, Finnish or also some new Russian schemes) ask in the forum and there’re always be someone that knows the answer. Hope this helps… Most regards.

I think the T-72 is an awesome vehicle. I’ve had some trouble tracking down a good kit of one in 1/35 scale however. Any suggestions?

Thanks Zero. That does help a bit.

I didn’t know the Polish was darker than the Russian (Who knew?) and yes, I am building the known versions of the T-72. even the T-90. I did find some Aftermarket stuff from AEF designs, as well as some Verlinden stuff. I know JP Models makes an accurate T-72M1 turret which is in Finland.

The Books do help (I got the osprey as well as the concord) and I am gonna order another T-72 book published by Kagero (I think it’s Kagero).

The specific ones I am asking though are the East German, Iraqi, Iranian, and whatever else comes to mind. Thanks for the Tanxheaven site, that will definitely be a big help.

I do like the T-72, but I’m more of a fan of the T-80. But hey, only type at a time, ya know?

Tank ya, tank ya.

Yeah, I have the books you have and they’re pretty good, but I think the best book is Wings & Wheels Publicatioons T-72M1 in detail… It’s a little expensive but it’s worth for the money you’ll pay… I’d like to buil and M-84, but I have almost no info about it as I wasn’t able to find good close-up pics in the net… One more thing: the Iranian T-72 are not T-72, but M-84 captured to Kuwait. If you want to build a T-90 better you use the Miniarm conversion sets for the T-90instead of kirin or AEF Designs conversion sets… They’re a lot of detail sets (turret, hull, wheels, rubber padded tracks… each sold separately), but I think they’re the best, even Miniarm is about to release a conversion set for the T-90A with a new welded turret instead of the previous cast one. The T-90A, also called “Vladimir” is the most recent version of the T-90… Most regards.
