Someone at the local IPMS was cleaning out thier stashand gave away thier Airfix kits. Being free, I grabed up a bunch of them. A B-24, P-47, SBD-1 Devastator, Dauntless, TBM-3 Avenger, Petyalkov Pe2, Blenheim and a Revell P-70. I found a review for the SBD-1 that gives me a few tips and how to paint it and what to expect. Does anyone have any tips or painting these kits? I’m not going to try to perform any miracles in building them. Just going for a few quick builds.
Thanks
The B-24 is a fun build, and is best if you can get all the working parts to operate. It’ll be overall NMF with OD anti-dazzle panels. Don’t forget to paint the crew figures, all eight of them!
Apart from the seriously overpriced and difficult-to-build Valom kit, the Devastator’s the only game in town, and builds up into a nice, colourful model. Here’s a review:

As to the others, they’re pretty old, pretty basic, and, really, fit only for using for construction and painting practice. If you google Airfix 1/72 Avenger (or whatever), you’ll find pictures of appropriate colour schemes. You could make a well-detailed, accurate model from most of them (maybe not the Pe.2, which has some really serious shape issues), but more modern, more accurate, better-detailed kits of all of all of them are available, so why bother?
The P-47’s prop spins in a most satisfying way!
Me, I’ve always wanted a Pe.2 in purple with dayglo orange spots, and this would be a perfect opportunity.
Cheers,
Chris.
I build the Pe 2 a couple of years ago. The basic shape is good but very sparse on detail. The decals are garbage. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but receiving free Airfix kits from the sixties is kind of like getting yesterdays bread for free IMHO.[yuck]
