Build Complete: #11 Tamiya Chevy 30 CWT LRDG Truck (Scorpion Conversion) WIP

Hey Edmund ~~Lots of interesting inf / photos in your thread–way to be! I got onto my thread once, but not again. Tried to update–dont think it went on right, but cant check!!AARGG I want them to give up and change it back already(spellcheck has always been as easy as "new tab: www.freedictionary.com : and type in word) hey notice I couldn’t add alink that easy like before? I also couldn’t add photos in my thread the way I used to. You seem to be doing great…carry on, nevermind

Sweet photo Edmund!

BTW, Pierced Steel Planking, the other type of sand mat, seen strapped to the side.

Oh you mean the sand channels yes I would love some more the kit only came with one POS plastic one and I was hoping to find another or a PE replacement. i admit I was eying my AS 42!

Thanks Adam and I am sorry you are having difficulties. Your photos were not posted properly last night just a link that threw an error when I tried to access it.

When I get frustrated with the new changes and the poor performance I just remember it’s a free service of FSM and to be patient.

Then I kick my dog through a hedge!! [8o|] Just teasing he’s a Miniature Dachshund and well loved!!!

Making good progress with this one Edmund, looking forward to seeing the camo on this one.

Well, if I had the ditto smiley I would use that, but thats gone (grumble)… So I am looking forward to seeing some camouflage on this one too!

Thanks, Jim

Looking good Ed. I’m with the others, the camo is what I’m dying to see. The build is coming along nicely.

Rob

Edmund,

Count me in for looking forward to the camo.[:D]

Cheers

Dave

Sir Edmond…cmon man get some camo on you building machine so I can post another

FREAKING SWELL!

Bob

Thanks Bill, Rob , Jim, Bob, and Dave for the support and stopping by but I am going to have to disappoint you guys. I am scratch building two prototypes for the staked wood sides and to also include an option of leaving the staked sides off which I have seen in real word reference pics in Osprey Battle Series book. I love saying the word Prototype!! [:D]

I am trying to get the gun completed tonight.

Here is how it would look with the stakes sides removed.

Your the man Ed, you definitely have model fever my friend. Can’t wait to see the scratch items, right up my ally, nothing like white styrene eh.

Rob

I like the smell of stretched spruce in the morning!!

LOL, Nice looking build there, I can’t wait to see what you do with that scratchbuilding!

Thanks, Jim

Welcome to my world ! Great going Edmund Looking good. I’m going back to the bench, see sometime I guess, so fun figuring out how to work the site all over again…Oh boy Lets see if I can do anything here

See ya…

Hey Adam I responded to your PM.

I finished the Breda tonight and now all the major components are completed and I can start on the wood stake prototypes.

Schnobs… so sorry I missed this one 'til now but it is looking MY-T fine!

I will try to keep up now. Considering how long it takes to change pages just now it’s too much work getting behind[;)]

The “stinger” on this Scorpion looks mighty menacing Edmund, keep the updates coming!

It is always fun watching your process… never dull moments [H] in your postings! Your truck is looking great!

Keep going and thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you for your support Deafpanzer, Marc and Wbill. I am working with 1\35th scale 2by2 stock for the uprights and I am going to try two different versions of the stakes. I do not know how to make a square hole so I am planning to drill out th the holes with a pin vise for the uprights and use a friction fit for the prototypes

Research Update:

I am ready to cut some styrene and all I can think of is that and th paint job. I Performed some final research today and came across some really interesting material and pics I would love to share with you guys.

The Scorpion came with two different stingers and they were as follows:

37mm Bofors - The 37mm Bofors was a very common gun that could be found on all fronts of the war. Originally a Polish design, licensed copies of the gun were soon built by almost every Allied nation (the German 3,7cm PAK35 was actually an unlicensed copy of the Bofors).
Several Bofors guns were installed on Chevrolet WBs and Ford F30s, but they were pretty unpopular with the troopers since they weighed the vehicle down and took up way too much space. As enemy armor was very rarely encountered, some of the Bofors guns seem to have been unceremoniously dumped by the trucks’ crews to gain some extra space for supplies.
LRDG’s Bofors trucks usually carried 45 rounds each of AP and HE shells.

  • 20mm Breda - The Italian-built Breda 20/65 modello 35 gun was much more popular with the Group - it was lighter, had a much faster rate of fire, took up less space and it doubled as a very effective anti-aircraft gun.
The Breda, which was initially a belt-fed design, was equipped with 10-clip magazines; that way, gunners could quickly switch between different ammunition types as needed. To maintain a high rate of fire, the gunner’s assistant had to change cartridges as quickly as possible. The gun was fired via a foot-operated trigger; it could traverse by 360 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically.

I also found a really cool picture of the real thing that is in the Imperial War Museum. This is the type of planking I am leaning to wards the most.
