bug hunt

I’ve got an idea for a diorama that’s a little out of the ordinary but I need to find one or two models of ants. Any idea where I might find some?

I believe Heller has an ant kit, in about 10/1 scale.

i would think it would not be too hard to sculpt an ant. I dont know of any kits

Polar lights had some diorama kits out a few years ago with the ants and scorpion and the spider and the praying mantis attacking a town, city etc…

Yeah I had a couple of those dio kits. They are great for gundam dios. Won my first trophy by usinf the dio as the back ground for a 1/144 scale gundam. I don’t recall if there was an ant kit but I had the scorpion, I beleive a tarantula, and mantis. I beleive they were called Gigantics. I did a google and found these. Never seen the wasp kit befor but minor modification would make it an ant. Here is what I ran across…

I had the “giant praying mantis attacks the city” kit back in the 1970s. I was in cub scouts at the time, and mussed up the kit fairly badly, so the bug-head ended up in my pinewood derby car as the driver!

Those giant bug kits all date back a long time. Would be fun to try and build those things again now that I am a “big boy.”

I have never actully built the bugs. I bought them for the dios!LOL The bugs are reasting “piecefully” somewhere in my parts box! It comes with some little 70’s Corvetts and impala’s some crushed and some not and assorted little panicked “citizens”.

Yup, the Gigantics were some cool bug kits, alright. No ant, though.

As I mentioned earlier, Heller does indeed make a 10/1 ant. Looks pretty good, too.
Here’s a pic I found out there on the Internet:

I’ve seen this kit quite recently on the shelves in hobby shops here in Japan, but I didn’t see the kit listed on the Net in any lists of current Heller products.
You could probably find an anthill’s worth of 'em on e-Bay!

The Heller kit is also on my list. According to what I have read, the only problem is the legs should connect underneath kind of like this.

Saw one kit that was corrected and looked good. Read a story called “Atta” about a guy that shrunk down (don’t remember why) and befriened an ant that he rode. Used a needle for an lance. Would like to do something like that but with an ant that is ridden by a normal sized human. Armor, etc could look pretty cool.
When the Gigantics were rereleased, they did all but the Wasp. I have the other 3 and will probably will build the Mantis as a true bug (they are my favorite). Maybe do the same with the other 2. You see these all time on ebay for next to nothing.

I beleive my Gigantics came from the Kmart clearance isle like maybe a $1 or $2. There weas anold black and white movie, maye The Incredible Shrinking Man or sumthin like that, and he used a needle for a sword and had a thread that he would tie to the back so that he could also use it for a grappling hook. A man riding an ant would be a cool idea. Depending on the scale, a tooth pick or streched sprue would make a great needle after painting.

gah, i hate bugs. they freak me out. I am even kinda scared of ants when the same start to go that big… no I am not a sissy, I am kul with all other animals… insects are just plain scary to me okay?!

Anyway I thought you were talking about bugs from Starship Troopers… I have seen 30mm figures of those…

No, it has to be regular ants. The idea I had was for two ants, one showing the other his people farm. I had intended to use some 1/350 scale figures in a clear container. Maybe a pyramid or something.

Heeeey, now that’s cool. Great for a sci fi convention. I am attending Chattacon next week. I am currently working on the Robot and Dr. Smith. It will talk when I am done. I guess I need to post a “Work in Progress” thread on it…

Coincidentally, the vehicles in the little diorama in front of the Heller 10/1 ant model (that I posted previously) are 1/350 scale:

Looks like the kit is a good size for your idea.

Time to hit eBay!

I love the idea. By the title I was thinking Aliens. Some times mankind needs to get off its highhorse and realize how much more powerful nature is.

If I had the capability, I’d post some shots of some of my creations, including my racing dinosaur.

Hi ikar01. I looked on Squadron, and they have the Heller ants for $5.46 each. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I don’t know how I missed it before. I have two ordered along with some 1/350 figures. I should have it done for our regional IPMS contest in a few months on the space coast. I’ll take some photos and find someone who can post them.
