I am using white ensign paints for the first time and I am experiencing some problems…
I have sprayed the deck and I am now attempting to hand paint all the details but the deck colour is showing through. I have thinned the paint with thinners and white spirits but still there are streaks and the deck colour can clearly be seen through . I usually use an airbrush but cant because of the detail so I am not really used to hand brushing ?
Anyone have a clue as to what I am doing wrong?
I normally use Tamiya acrylic paint but I really wanted to get my first ship build as accurate as possible…hence the change in paints/ I have noticed that colourcoats paint seems to have an almost rubbery feel to it!
The very nice people at White Ensign will be only too happy to answer any questions you have about their paints. Check their website. As to the painting approach, it might have been easier to spray paint the deck fittings first, then mask them (tape or Maskol) and spray the deck afterwards. If I had been following your plan, I would use enamel paint - stirred but not thinned - to paint the fittings had I painted the deck first. Hope this is of value to you.
I second the motion about not thinning enamel paints, at least when you first open them. I use Model Master enamels and the little jars of Testors for brush painting. I’ve tried stirring them, but also usually throw in 4-6 BBS for each large bottle and 2 BBs into the small ones, to help with the agitation.
As the paint gets older, you do have to thin it some so it remains brushable. If it doesn’t cover in one coat, though, I’m guessing you’ve thinned it too much.
