In this months issue of FSM, someone wrote in that he wished that someone would come out with a 1/48 scale C-119 flying boxcar. I would like to say that I agree. I have wanted a 1/48 model of this aircraft for a long time. I would also like to see a Viet Nam era C-119 gunship, that was called a Stinger. My hope is that some of the manufacturers see this. So, how about it. Anybody else out there that would like to see a quality kit of the C-119 Flying Boxcar?
Yeah. Let’s get a $126 kit from Trumpeter that we can tear apart to build the original version of the Flight of the Phoenix plane. Maybe a diorama. I still remember doing that conversion to an old Aurora C-119 when I was still in High School ca 1973 or so. “Start Pullin Mr. Dorfmann!!”
I just bought a 1/72 C-119 boxcar that I’m hoping I can convert into an AC-119. I also recently bought a 1/72 AC-47 That I haven’t started yet. My next one will be the AC-130 but from what i can see of the going rates that will be no time soon.
FYI; Military channel had a hour special on the AC-130 which also featured video footage of the AC-47. I need to try and find a copy of that show.
I don’t know if they are OOP but they can still be found on evil-bay, occassionly for a reasonable price. You can read my review of the kit here http://www.olddogsplanes.com/c119.html
I was stationed at Lockbourne AFB where most of the gunship training on C-119’s was done prior to deployment to Vietnam. The main issue with the kit from an accuracy standpoint is that it is equipped with 4 bladed props. While the K’s went to nam with them they were quickly replaced with 3 bladed props due to run away issues with the four bladed props. Even the box art shows the aircraft with 3 bladed props. The K’s could get by with the lower thrust 3 bladed props due to the jet engines, the G model gunships were stuck with the four bladed units as they needed all the thrust they could get.
