Disclaimer: I typically build aircraft models BUT was lured by the lovely box art and color side panel photos of the constructed 1/400 Academy Titanic. There was an additional sticker on the box indicating “GOLD VERSION”…surely indicating some top notch extras inside!!! Upon opening my treasure I was horrified to see the entire kit plated in gold and chrome…clearly, I am an idiot!!!
Is there any way to remove this plating without damaging the plastic or creating paint adhesion problems?
An overnight soak in Windex ought to take care of it for you. Little parts I spray, but, for the amount you have, you may need to put it in a glass dish. Most plastics are okay (I’ve never had a problem) but, I would still test it on a sprue jjjjjjuuuuust in case.
Thumbs Up on the “Rat Patrol!” It is responsible for my love affair with Jeeps, to this day!
I use Super Clean. It’s a concentrated degreaser in a purple bottle. Works very well in a short amount of time, and also removes the lacquer coat underneath the chrome.

Re: Rat Patrol and love affair with jeeps…I actually got to come blasting over some dunes in my jeep while visiting North Carolina. My wife was not amused BUT for me it was a secret thrill of a lifetime!!!
It’s been a long time since I had to worry about removing chrome from plastic parts. I will have to give both Windex, and Super Clean a try, just out of curiosity.
BTW, Rat Patrol Guy…is it just coincidence that your screen name initials, RPG, also apply to Rocket Propelled Grenade???
Wow, how chessy would it be to build it as “gold-plated”…ecchhhhhhhh…talk about a bad marketing move…guess the box-art HAD to be deceptive in order for it to sell…
