Hope one of the experten can help here: The lengths of chain supplied by Revell to rig the bowsprit of the Kearsarge are a very cute gold/brass colour. Is there a quick and dirty way to make them black without spraying them with paint ? The links in one of the chains are very fine and spraying them will probably clog them up.

There is a product called Blacken-It or similar, available from several sources ( Micro-Mark? etc). Works great.
I agree with Gerard blacken -it works very well.Or if you want more of a weathered you can use Patina- it.Made by the same company gives the metal more of an antiquing look weathered look.

Several good metal toning fluids are available from Bluejacket (www.bluejacketinc.com). I don’t know what problems may come up in shipping such chemicals overseas, though.
Another chemical that will work (according to reliable sources; I haven’t tried it myself) is gun bluing. In the U.S. it’s available from virtually any store that sells rifles, down to and including Wal-Mart. I don’t know how widely-available such things are in Europe.
In any case, it’s always a good idea to precede the blackening process by rinsing the brass in white vinegar, and to follow it with a quick spray of flat lacquer (e.g., Testor’s Dullcoat). Otherwise the blackening tends to rub off.

Thanks for the tip John. Gun bluing might be problem here in Holland. Pity that “whacky 'backy” and other mind enhancing chemicals that are more freely available here can’t be used [;)].
