Has anyone built a Clipper? I’m currently working on the Airfix 1:144 model. I’m wondering if anyone knows the correct color of the yellow panel on the upper surface of the wing?
I think it depends on which plane you build. I have seen both a yellow and an orange color used. My son just got the Academy kit in the same scale and it comes with an orange decal for the wing.
Here are a couple of images I found on the web.
I had seen the lower image, but not the upper with the bright orange.
I guess I should have been more specific. As you say, it depends on the plane you’re building, but I would think that any of the Pan Am planes would have the same color scheme.
Thanks for the reply!
Hello therbert,
I’m building the Minicraft 1/144th Clipper too. And they provided a full upper decal in intl orange to adorn the top wing. See pics and box art[:)]
I think I have an airfix kit on my hands from the looks of the inside wing however[;)]
I hope to have mine done soon, and I’ll post it on the IFIF group build thread.
Hope to see yours completed as well[:D]
later,
Steve,
I will have to check my son’s kit to see if it has the same marking.
How are you planning on doing all the fuselage windows? I advised using Crystal clear after the kit is painted but my son is just stubborn enough to use the windows in the kit.
How big is this kit built? I’m guessing a wingspan of 12-14". I’d like to build one but not sure I have room.
Aftermarket,
It measures out at 12.5" Not very big at all. I also have a Spruce Goose from the Minicraft kit sitting on my work table, 1:200 scale. It has a 19" wingspan. It’s nearly finished as well, just have to do the props, install the canopy, and final painting/detailing. I really like flying boats.
Next in line I have a Testors/Italieri C-130 1:48 that’s been sitting on my shelf for at least 15 years…
Incidentally, I did some scaling, and the Spruce Goose in 1:48 scale comes out to a 6’ 8" wingspan. Now that would be a kit…
Is it likely that anyone makes a set of aftermarket decals for this kit? I can see in the picture from Nicodemus that the set that comes with the Minicraft iteration of this kit is much better than the Airfix set.
Don’t know of any aftermarket sets for this plane but you might be able to get a set from Minicraft directly.

Kit number is 14503
Kit name is Pan Am B-314 Clipper
site says you will have to pay postage and handling.
Oh, and I checked and our kit also has the Airfix logo inside the wing.
Yes, I sent them an e-mail yesterday, but haven’t yet received a reply.
Thanks!
