This is just a test to see if I got this right. If it works, you should see a pic of a captured P-51 Mustang B.
I found the original on a web-site somewhere. It’s representative of a fighter used by Hungarian pilots at Neuruppin to learn how to use their Fw190s to the best effect against the P-51.
It’s Luftwaffe designation was T9+HK.
There was no top view, so I had to wing it.[:D]
This is the first one I felt was good enough to post. Hope you guys like it.
Off topic a bit, but had problems shooting this with a digital camera. It didn’t want to focus. Any suggestions as to how to go about getting a good image?
Liam
Great look Mustang!! It’s great to see something new with such a common subject!!
Sorry, Cant help with the camera though. Im still trying to figure out where the batteries go in mine[:I]
Nah, rumours and innuendo, I just happened to get it figured out before some others did. There were others who got it figured out before me. I was glad to help in any way I could.
The mustang looks great, and I love the scheme. Great conversation piece as well.
Very nice, I agree with the others on the markings…it is nice to see something that has different markings![^]
I would love to learn to put pix on here but it would be like trying to explain the theory of relativity to a horse…[][X-)][D)][%-)]
Here’s the link referred to above…has about a dozen artist’s renditions of various aircraft…if this link doesn’t open, do a google, lycos, yahoo, etc search and type in “caged eagles”
Nice looking Mustang. Have you seen Squadron’s “Strangers in a Strange Land?” There are pics in there of captured P-51Ds, P-40s, B-17s, B-24s, B-26s, P-38s, etc. Very interesting book. There were two volumes, and the first (the one I have) may be out of print now. Good to see someone build one in those markings !
If your camera has a manual focus, I would suggest using it. An auto focus can only guess where you want to place the attention. If you are using a large aperture (small f-stop #), only the point in the center of the frame will be sharp.
I’ve posted some camera & photo info at another site. “An Introduction” covers camera terminology in everyday terms. There are other threads covering lighting, lenses, and framing. You may find it useful to you. Feel free to ask about anything you don’t understand, I’m here to help.
With regards to the camera, it will probably depend greatly on the brand and model. The standard point-and-shoot type of digital cameras are difficult to make work for photographing models. If your camera has manual options you will likely need to use them. If it doesn’t, most cameras have macro mode (usually dinoted by a flower symbol) which is fairly well suited to models. However, if you have a fancy digital SLR (I love mine!) then using the manual settings that Pixilater mentioned above should do the trick. I usually stop my camera all the way down to get the maximum depth of field and bring the entire model into focus. But that requires a tripod and remote switch, since it usually means a 1-2 second exposure in daylight.
Good pic regardless. I think you did alright. Great job!
That’s really good! It reminds me of those B-17s and B-24s that used to radio the allied bombers’ altitude, speed and range to nazi AA gunners… nicely done panel lines too!
shrikes:
thanks for the kind words, and to everyone else too. It was my first effort at doing the panel lines and was surprised at just how effective it can be. It really does bring the model to life in a way I never fully appreciated before.
9x19mm: The decals are a mix of things. The crosses are from eaglecals #49 1/48 scaled german ww2 national insignia. The Swaztika is from a 1/32 scale something, given to me by Oggy. I think it was a spare from a me109 or a me262.
(it had to be large to be seen)
The “T9” and the “HK” are another story. I couldn’t get the right size form my own spares nor the correct font, sooooo, the small “T9” on the fuselage are Letraset, the large “HK” and the underwing “T” are handpainted ( and ten tidied up again by Oggy) and finally, the under-wing “9” of the “T9” is a close-enough spare from an Irish Air Corps decal sheet I have.
Thank God there was no nose art!!
I do believe that Swaztika markings can be bought and most of the kits listed on the site are available in most scales. It’s the markings you’ll need to source or be clever with.
Pixilater: Thanks for the link re: photographs. I;ll checke out the site and see how it goes.
