BM-13 Katiusza... Olive drab or Russian Green?

I have this old Italeri kit… but in the painting guide says: Olive drab for a Russian version and Khaki for a Polish version… I want a Russian version, but Olive Drab?.. I know that it’s a Studebaker truck, but the rocket launcher is Russian made… so that’t the problem, I don’t know if painting it Olive Drab or Any Russian green (I’ve seen so many Russian armor painted in various shades of green), or maybe a camouflaged version would be nice… can anyone tell me?.. Thanks in advance.

When I built mine, I painted it in russian green. While painting the truck, I added some white so it would be slightly different in color from the launcher. HTH

Most of there trucks came from the States in O.D. so they never repainted them. You also must remember what was happing then, the Russians took what was givin them and just put it out on the front as soon as they got it.A lot were set up on the front lines so you might have a O.D. truck with a R.green rocket luncher.Digger

[#ditto]

also russian green was what ever green that was in the paint bucket as long as it was green

If you check out this post below, you can see that some Russian tanks are not really Olive Drab, they are more darker than Olive Drab.

Take a look at the post and scroll down a bit, you;ll find a photo of KV-1 crossing a ditch.
You be the judge [:)]

Ben

I’d go for OD. If it is a studebakertruck it came in OD, and the russians didn’t repaint them before deployment (why would they?)

One thing though…i only know of the old italeri katucha, which was a postwar model mounted on a russianmade truck. Have you got a pic of the model/ boxart? If the kit now comes corrected i want to have a go at this as well [:D]

Cheers, Jan [:)]

btw have you checked this site? >> http://www.o5m6.de/main.html it has got lots of pictures of russian lend-lease trucks/ armor [;)]

I must agree with Schweinhund about the Italeri kit. It was a Russian made truck. However, Italeri made a Water Tank truck that was the Studebaker on which you can kitbash to come up with two entirely different truck kits, " A ‘stud’ rocket launcher and a Russian water truck".

I’ve cheched the site… The US6 U-3 with the Katiusha Rocket launcher and the Italeri kit are totally different trucks… It seems more like a Zis-151 truck (I’ve researched a little)… so I might try any Russian green…

Is it his one by any chance?

If so, it is a russian build Zil-157(?) truck [;)]

It is not suitable for a WW2 version, i remember an article about converting/backdating this kit in FSM, must have been somewhere in the 90-ies (yes, i’m that old[swg] )

Cheers, Jan [:)]

Yes… That’s the truck… Is it the Zvezda box-art?.. if yes, that’s the Italeri kit… So I’ll paint it with Russian green… Thanks to all…

Yes, it is the zvezda box, but i think it is a re-box of the old italeri kit.

Can you guys clarify this information about a Studebaker truck? In 1/35? I’ve never heard of such a thing. The Italeri Water Truck is based on the GMC (not Studebaker).

As far as Katyusha’s go, there’s the Italeri/Zvesda postwar one pictured earlier and the Alan Katyusha on Zis-6 Russian truck.

One of the complaints of the softskin fans is the absence of any Studebaker (only a few inaccurate resin sets). I’m sure that this wouldn’t have snuck under the radar. Can anyone illuminate?

Thnx

I think you are right there…i can’t comment on the watertanktruck, simply because i’ve never seen/ build it. If i’m not mistaken, the conversion in the before mentioned FSM article used a resin studebakercab, on a GMC (?) chasis. I have to dig it up in the uge pile i call archive [:D]

There is a studebaker kit, in plastic, on the way however. It has been anounced by ICM at the nuremberg toyfare. Also on PMMS: http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/newkitnews/icm.htm

Yes finescale did do a backdating article. 11/1996 page 38

Glad someone brought this up. The Italeri and Zvezda kits are one and the same, and are NOT a Studebaker truck, but a Russian Zis or similar vehicle. Forget exactly. In any case, go with Russian green, its the right colour choice.

BTW, for those wondering there IS an announced 1/35 version of the Studebaker being released in 1/35 injection moulded plastic by…blah, the name escapes me. Check www.hobbyterra.com, view their 1/35 listings, and scroll down 'till you see it.

To recap, all stated in different threads above, but confusing to sort out as different people are calling them different things.

  • The Italeri and Zvezda kits are the same parts, just under two different names.
  • They are both of a post-war Soviet Zil-157 based Katyusha.
  • The WWII version was based on a Lend-Lease Studabaker chassis.
  • There is currently no1/35 Studabaker chassis in plastic, but ICM has announced a future release of one.
  • There is/was a Studabaker cab in resin. There was an article in the NOV '96 issue of FSM on page 38 for converting the Katyusha to a WWII version.

Hope that clears it up for all.

what about mounting the rockets on the

eastern express (ex toko kit) gaz aaa truck

they used gaz vehicles thru the whole war

if you must have a wwii truck

Yes, I think it could be a Gaz AAA truck, and what about a 3-axle Zis-5?
