I’m inquiring about techniques to create a burnt metal effect. I’ve seen great dioramas with destroyed tanks, but can’t seem to find any info on how it was done. So, if any of you could enlighten me on how to achieve the bleach white, twisted, burnt metal, charred black remains of a perfectly hit battle tank hull. Then I would be forever thankful.
I think I remember reading somewhere that baking soda could be used in this capacity… I dunno though.
Thanks.
This is what got me back into modeling after 20 years. About six months ago I needed to constuct a blown up pz kfw III for a miniature test for a DVD. It was to be bogged down on a Russian steppe as a R/C tiger passed by. This was all in 1/72 by the way. First off, research…there’s a great site featuring photos of destroyed german ( probably all armies ) armor from Russian archives. I don’t have the link, but a google search will get you there. Hundreds of photos that will give you incredible ideas, trust me; turrets blown off, whole tigers upside down as well as just small penetrations and fires. You’ll see what happens in reality and simply work that in: melted hatches, twisted bogie wheels and of course, the twisted scattered track links. Decide before the build so you can alter the hull if necessary (cutting off the bottom to simulate sunken in mud for example) and delete/alter hatches and such then pick a wind direction and paint it up! Simple huh?
good luck and good photo hunting.
Oracle,
i reviewed the article last night.
aside from suggesting that you add grey to the black for burn damage,
and to remember that rubber roadwheels close to the fire
will be reduced to grey ash,
it was short on specifics.
