blackwolf

and anyone else. recently posted about the success of researching for the “mary anne” . one of the pics was of the a/c black cat 13 i was informed that this a/c was renamed the “mary anne”. however found this caption for the black cat 13 http://www.100thbg.com/mainpages/crews/crews5/steussy.htm which seems to be opposite from the earlier info. would this have been common practice? meaning the renaming of a/c. also would the a/c have gotten an entire new crew? cant see this type of thing as being common. comments??

Hey Joe,

If a crew finished a tour and went home the aircraft would be assigned to another crew, so long as it still had some life left. And name changes did occur frequently when crew changes were made.

Another thing to consider is that crews did not always go out on ops in the same plane on every mission. I believe that they did fly in ‘their’ ship more often than not, but there were always exceptions. This may have been one of those exceptions or it could be that the info you have found is just plain not %100 accurate.

I haven’t been able to look around any more for you on this subject; I just haven’t had much time and haven’t taken the time when I did have it. (And I know the quizsters are getting restless!) But I’ll try and see what else I can find out on this…

Fade to Black…

blackwolf, thanks for the info. just seemed strange that this a/c was named twice and the idea that i was told it was used in dday but in aug '44 it was in russia with a different crew. feel bad about taking up your time with this. maybe i can make it up to you in the future.
