Black Paint as a Primer ?

I have read some of you using a gray primer and then spraying a flat black coat and then the color you want the model to look like. Now I somewhat understand using the black for weathing, but in the cockpit of a airplane ?

Can someone enlighten me please.

Thanks

Bud

Hi,

I think they’re using the black in the cockpit as a pre-shading techniqe. It’s an alternative to using a wash after you’ve painted.

always something new everyday [:)]

I am going to get another subjest about washing and weathing.

I tried it as a primer once or twice. For lighter shades of intereor colors, some grays, greens, yellows, I’ve used black to bring out a little definition. I haven’t used the technique as black as a primer since I like the results I get from putting black on gray primer around the edges as a touch of preshading better.

I’ve seen a tuturial on armor painting that used flat black AS the primer and built up the Panzer Grey on top. It was very effective for highlighting edges of bolts, nuts and the edges of the armor.
