I’m working on that old 1/48 Arii Ki-61 Tony this weekend as an ‘in flight’ model and doing it with Alclad 2. Here she is with a new Squadron canopy installed (that also fixes the low front deck issue) and Krylon glass black primer. I decanted this right from the rattle can with no thinner added. Three light coats followed by a forth heavy coat to give a nice uniform gloss finish. Aeromaster decals will end up on this in place of the somewhat inadaquate kit decals.
Looks pretty neat all black doesn’t it?
Need some Yellow in it hehehhe [:P]
Black and Yellow always looked good to me

Looking good. So you must be going to post shade. [:D] So your using the Krylon as the base coat for the Alclad? Very interesting, can’t wait to see the results.
Looks good in Gloss Black. Almost a shame to top coat it [:D].
I’m really having some fun with this one. Have to stop at this point and let the paint harden up a bit. Tomorrow I’ll start working on contrasting panels, fabric surfaces, white bands and red.
Looked good in basic black… looks great all dolled up in silver.
That’s pretty sweet looking swanny! I wish I could get my Alcad as uniform as yours! how do you do it? Mine always seems to get “splotchy”
Radmax8, it was easy really. First I was careful to have the surface prepared which means all sanding and polishing comlete and cleaned off - dust, fingerprints, everything. I decanted the Krylon and put down three light coats then applied a forth heavy coat. After a few hours I started with the Alclad and did three light coats with the last being just a little heavier. That was it, perfect results.
Charging ahead with IJN light gray for the fabric covered controls, Magnesium for the contrasting panels and some red going onto the gear doors.
WOW she’s looking GOOD!

Swanny, excellent job on this bird so far! I’ve tried “natural metal” finishes before (most nowhere near as successful as yours), but never heard of using a gloss black Krylon primer. What’s the trick or secret–is that what it takes to create such an excellent finish??? Please enlighten those of us who only have dreamed of such a fantastic natural metal paint job!
Very nice Swanny .[:)]
Senojrn, stop by my website, there is an article under the tools and tips section all about working with Alclad and Krylon.
Wow Swanny that is just tooooo cool! Man I’m sure glad you share your builds!
Thank you

All the painting, other than Future, is now done. I’ll let this set for a few days so everything can harden up then will start the decal process.
She’s gonna be a beauty. I like the mix of colors on this one. Can’t wait to see her out of the hangar
Swanny, that looks simply amazing! The Japanese got the looks of that plane just right. Your first class painting also helps, phenominal job. I wish I could look at that all day. Congrats, my friend!
