Hola, for years I have always handpainted my aircraft but now I want to venture into airbrushing and start with Zvezda’s 1/144 Tupolev Tu-160. I want to try the black basing technique but I have not found the answer to a simple question I have about it. I know you use gloss black for silver, but what about for every other colour? Do you still use gloss black or matt black? If anyone is seasoned in this technique I would appreciate a straight answer.
Thanks
You are correct about the gloss for metallics, they tend to really make blemishes stand out. The smoother the base the better metallics look.
The only source I have watched black base a model is on Andy’s Hobby Headquarters You Tube channel. He uses flat black and his finished products look good…on video anyway.
No tool does a great job all by itself. You need to learn to use it by practice. I would not start with fancy techniques until you master the basics. This is particularly true with airbrushing. You will need to find air pressures, mixing ratios, types of paint that works for you. I’d start with a kit that only requires one color, use a spray can primer, and perfect that one-color paint job. Don’t start with trying to learn two new techniques on a single kit.
