Big Dora is in the shop . . . .

She arrived two days ago and after wrestling her down the stairs, I’ve finally got her up on the table [:D]

My plan is to build the base first along with a table to mount it on. She is eventually going to stay in the ‘guy’s room’ above the garage.

As I am working on the 1/35 base, I’m also going to be assembling the 1/144 Dora as a pre-build just to get a better understanding of where everything is supposed to fit. Now it’s off to HD to get some wood to butcher…

Wow. I love that workshop. A little too clean to belong to a modeler. [;)]

Yeah, that’s because I just got finished building it about a month ago. Took about 400 sqft of the basement, walled it off, and added a ceiling. My in-progress stuff hasen’t gotten spread out yet and now Dora arrives.

Also, I’m an engineer so that kinda makes me anal by default [:D]

What a workshop, really what a workshop. I’m jealous, I think I spend too much time and money drinking otherwise I’d get a proper workshop just like that one.

Good luck with the kit too, looks nice.

Terry.

Can I hire you to make a shelf for paints? My carpentry skills are not what you might call good.

lol I gotta chime in too. FOrget the Dora, I’m jealous of that workshop too [:P]

[#ditto] [#ditto].

Yep, every modeller’s dream… your very own specious workshop that has everything.

Ben

Seems like you’ve started something here… workshop envy ! It looks really well lit…how many flourescent tubes did you put in ? BTW congrats on the Dora. Its out of my price range but I’m looking forward to seeing one done.

Forget it, you’re not going to be storing it in a room above the garage. It’s going to be parked in the garage!

And I agree with the rest of the guys, very nice shop.

Good luck with the Dora. I envy your workshop BTW.

Regards, Rick

Well, I found a couple different mouldings I could use for the base and scoped out the other materials. Looks like about $250 for the wood and another $100 or so for the plexiglass. I’d rather use glass than plexi so I’ll get an estimate on that this week before I start the final design and buy materials.

The model base parts are surprisingly heavy and have cross bracing on the underside so they won’t squash or flex. The fit is pretty good given the size (11.5" wide x 83.25" long). There are places along the joints where rocks don’t mate up with anything so some minor sculpting is in order.

(OT technical, boring stuff for Wirraway, apologies in advance) There are 18- 1’x4’ recessed fixtures in the room and each has 2- F32T8/835/ALTO Phillips lamps and an electronic ballast. Each fixture uses about 60 watts. The lamps are 3500 Deg Kelvin color temperature with a CRI of 92 (that means very good color rendition). ALTO is the low-mercury lamp, better for the environment. The light level is around 120 footcandles and the uniformity is very good. I can lean over a table and hardly cast any shadow. It’s a combination of the light distribution from the fixture, their spacing, and the light colored walls. Asleep yet? [zzz]

And just for grins, here is the 1/35 Dora base beside the 1/144 Dora base beside the 1/144 Leopold base.
