Sorry… because I was in a hurry the last time, I didn’t explain my post very well… here it goes: The kit I have is the 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf-109E 3/4 with Kettenkrad from Academy… this excellent kit have in the box art an airplane flown by Heinz Bar… I’ve painted my kit like this… it is a 1940 plane, and I don’t now exactly which swastika is the correct one for this version… I have Techmod 1/72 swastikas, and I know, the size is the number 1 swastika, but I don’t konw if is 1A (this have a white surround with a thin black edge) or 1B (this have only a white surround)… please, can you help me with that?..
I’m afraid that I don’t have any infromation on Bar’s aircraft in particular, but acording to Jaroslaw Wrobel’s book, Camoflage and Markings: Luftwaffe 1935-1945 Pt. 1 he gives this:
“In September 1938, a decision was made to eliminate the highly visible red sash and white circle that was used as a background forthe swastika - leaving only the swastika, with a thin white border having a thickness of 1/6 of the span of the emblem. Shortly thereafter, this was white border was supplemented by a thinner black border with a thickness of 1/24 of the swastika’s span.” He goes on to state that some of the earlier style insignia were used untill the Polish campaign.
Don’t know if that helps, but it would seem that according to this the black outlined one would be the best bet, unless someone have a picture of his aircraft of course!
I can’t find a reference pic of Bar’s early 109’s, but in 1940 it was most likely type 1A. I do have pics of his later 109G model, and at that time it only had the white surround.
