Best technique to apply lighter colors over dark colors.

I am painting a scale model car several different colors. Normally the process is to apply light colors first and then work my way to the darker colors.

The problem is there are some places where masking is much easier to apply a darker color first. I have to paint Yellow over the light green and dark blue in a few spots on each side of the car. The other places that have a lighter color next to a darker color can easily be masked to paint the lighter color first.

What is the best way to cover a dark color with a light color?

The colors are Yellow, red, light green and dark blue.

I would probably use a white primer over the dark blue, followed by yellow on top of the white primer.

I had to put yellow againt black once and just dusted in the same primer against the taped up black that I used over all. As I recall it was a platinum primer I had mixed up, so very very light grey, almost white. I was using Model Master enamels for the colors. I did both the black and the reprime with a narrow pattern and fine needle airbrush. Then just opened the needle tip up for the overall yellow.
