Im an plastic model guy who loves 1/24 cars, 1/48 planes & 1/35 military kits. Since Ive been away from this hobby for 15+ years & the spark just hit me again I was wondering this…
Who makes the best kits today in the areas above? Looking for ease of assembly, detail, decals and so forth. Also, who can recommend a good website for these models that carries paints, tools, etc.
First of all, [#welcome] Mike! Glad to see you have found your way back to the fold. As for the best kits available, for every person who answers you will probably get a different opinion. But, here’s mine: as far as overall quality, ease of fit, and general accuracy you really cannot beat Tamiya. As for the cars, they mainly do the more exotic ones, and if your auto interrest lay in muscle cars then Revell/Monogram is just about the only game in town. Hasegawa also makes wonderful aircraft models, and the armor scene has really taken off with the advent of the new technology that Dragon has brought to the table. Sorry to ramble…
Here’s a link to Squadron, a wonderful mail order hobby site. Good luck in your modelling! [tup]
Welcome to the Forums & back to the hobby [#welcome]. I build mostly 1/48 aircraft & there are lots of great kits available. For excellent fit & ease of assembly, Tamiya is hard to beat.
Tamiya = Excellent fit and quality. You can get some of the older Tamiya kits at bargain price. Also has lots of 1/48 armor kits coming out as well as aircraft kits.
DML/Dragon - Excellent quality with lots of varieties. Newer kits are bit pricy, but you get lots of detail and goodies with it.
Academy - New kits are excellent and decent price. Older kits are knock off of Tamiya kits. Also has 1/48 aircraft kits as well.
Well, you have some catching up to do (15 years worth), so now go out buy kits and start building!!! [:D]
As another just getting back into things, let me say…scanning the forums that interest you and those about painting, tools and tips is a fabulous resource here!
Not all, but most threads have an accurate subject line about the posts. You can learn a lot in a short time…so get ready to bookmark a lot of pages!
The people here are fabulous! They care about the hobby…and the hobbyist!
There are many different schools of thought on who makes the best kits today. Everybody has their own favorites for their own reasons. Some change in quality from time to time, both up and down. Don’t be afraid to branch out with new kits from “previously uknown” companies!
