What do you think is the absolute best OOTB 1/48 Mosquito kit?? I just want to try and build it straight from the box, with no AM stuff. What do you think, and what version??
Probably Tamiya’s, no?
the airfix kit is nothing to scoff at.
even the original issue of the kit made up very nicely.
I would like to get my hands on the new issue.

well on my scale it’ll be Tamiya’s, then Revellograms, and then Airfix’s, all are really good kits but I think the Airfix is a little more ruffer then the Revellograms but Tamiyas blows both away hands down because it’s the newest and has better detailing and it’s not an old rehash like the other 2, now if Airfix & Revellogram updates their kits then from the cost alone they will be the real winners
Mine would be the Revell D.H Mosquito in 1/32 as i still have mine in original box not yet made up from the 70,s its the MK IV bomber and from what i know and have been told by modellers its a very good one in that scale, good luck in what your looking for.

Tamiya, hands down. My sentimental fave is the Monogram kit which was dang nice for the time. And the Airfix kit… ‘eh’…
Fade to Black…
Tamiya, no question:

John…there’s been a few kits I have built over the years where I could have used that tool to make some adjustments to it.
Cautiously agree that the Tamiya kit has the edge but have not got one of Airfix latest attempts yet. There is a bit of work now going on behind the doors at Airfix and the tooling and products are showing signs of real improvement. Has anyone got the latest kit from them??
Sure, alotta Airfix stuff from the last several years has been pretty groovy, no news flash there. But their Mossie has been around for quite some time and although it’s a fairly decent kit it’s just not in the same league as Tamiya’s.
Fade to Black…
And on the desk at the moment… In the red corner we have The Monogram 1/48th Mosquito, while in the blue corner it’s the Airfix 1/48th BMkXVI/PRXVI.
Comparing like for like I’ve come up with the following;
The Monogram dates from around 1965, it’s worst feature is the tail.
The Fin/rudder is way too tall, whereas the tailplane’s are each around 4mm too short in span.
The engine nacelles seem too bulbous and though the wingspan looks about right, the distance from the fuselage to the nacelle is too short.
The interior seems to be rather basic too, though I haven’t really gotten around to that bit yet.
The prop’s look rather spindly and the rockets are trash!
All in all, a product of it’s time. Built up it may not look too bad, but compared with a more modern model it’s way out.
The Airfix BMkXVI box contains lots of extra bits, basically it’s the old fighter issue with a new fuselage, upper wings & interior bits.
So lots of the spare parts will be donated to the Monogram kit.
I only started them yesterday, no doubt I’ll find more to whinge about soon!
The new Airfix is an NF XXX, I’ve seen the box but thats all so far.
I’d say go for the Tamiya, it should be worth the extra money.

Thanks guys, you have all confirmed my suspision. I am a large fan of Tamiya. I will check them out. When I was at the LHS the other day, I did happen to notice at least two different versions offered by Tamiya in 1/48, so I’ll have to get some references and check out which one I will model. Thank you all!!!
