Best Looking Ship?

I’m looking to start a new modeling project and thought I would through it out to everyone.

What is the best looking sci-fi ship? Preferably Star Trek, but lets open this up to everything.

Personally, I gotta say the Galaxy-class. A sexy ship and a real blast to build (If you can find a kit on e-bay! I paid $70 for one, then another $30 for custom decals and parts! But its definitely worth the money.)

Overall i think the best looking one is the falcon from star wars

but for star trek i am going to say the original movie enterprise

I doubt I could ever settle on a single starship I would call best looking. I’m going to suggest another Sci-Fi scratchbuild group project after the current one comes to a close. I’ll share with you the ships on my list of possible builds for that project.

The light cruiser was one of my favorites from SFB and I’d like to see it becomes a reality in 1/1000 as well.

As you can see I’m trying to figure out what to build myself. Best? They are all good just pick something that peaks your interest.

Trek-wise I like the Akira class, and possibly the Nebula. The Galactica is up there too. From the SW universe the Mon Cal cruiser is nice.

My personal opinions are the Galactica and the Andromeda Ascendant (not just it’s A.I.) For ST ships I like the movies Enterprise 1701 & 1701A.

I’ll have to go with StevenQ on this one. My Akira is 95% done, so a Nebula it is. Gotta love Federation Models.

For ST i would have to go with the Delta Flier.
Best overall? That’s really tough but i thing i would pick something from B5, White Star or a Vorlon ship, even the Shadow ships are sweet.

For me, it’s either Thunderbird 2, The Zero-X (done that), the Hawk from Space:1999 (done that, too) or the Eagle Transporter (on my ‘To-do’ list

Tough one there, lots to choose from if you open up the field a bit.

For Star Trek stuff, as far as Federation ships go, I think Sovreign Class looks awesome, honorable mention to Akira and Excelsior classes as well.

My favorite ship from the Star Trek universe has got to be the Cardassian Galor Class ships. I can’t put my finger on just what it is about the design of them, but I wanted a model of one from the minute I saw “The Wounded” episode of TNG. Waited a long time for AMT to come out with one, too bad it was crap when they did }:frowning:

Outside of Star Trek, I liked just about every ship I saw in Babylon 5, particularly things from the Vorlon fleet. and the White Star.

From Star Wars, I’ll go along with the above vote for the Mon Cal cruiser. I’ve also got a soft spot for the Snow Speeder too, sure its slab sided and ground hugging, but every bit of it looks predatory.

Hey upnorth, I am sure you know this, but Warp Models offers a Galor-class. And Federation models offers a conversion kit to turn the Galor into the Keldon. http://www.federationmodels.com/

The Galor isn’t to bad priced, $67. I bought their Nebula Conversion kit and I am really happy with it. For ST ships, I think I prefer resin, espcially from Starcraft

Though I wasn’t to happy with the Centaur.

I’ve got the Keldon kit, nice casting. I wish I picked up their Romulan Scout.

Just out of curiosity, what was wrong with the Centuar? I don’t much care for the design, mixing scales on parts.

Yeah, there were a few things I didn’t like about it, compared to the Akira (Starcraft) and the Nebula (WARP).

Centaur
Cons:

  • The details weren’t as good as the other models. The windows were different sizes and were not aligned. It required filling a lot of them in and then rescribing them (which I got tired of after a while). The windows on the edge of the saucer I didn’t like because they were just drilled in deep. Probably going to go back and fill thoes in as well.
  • The sauser is inaccurate for the Centaur and even the Excelcior. There is terrecing which needs to be filed in and sanded smooth.
  • The casting itself wasn’t that good. I expect air bubbles and defects in any resin model (half the fun is in the repairs ), but there were air holes everywhere, especially on the nacelle attachments and the details under the saucer. Furthermore, there were deep groves along the entire length of the nacelles as well.
  • The nacelle spars were not symmetrical, as one was straight and one had a curve. All attempts to reform them using boiling water and clamps failed, as they just kept bouncing back. [I gave up]
  • Drilling the hole for the base was though, because there was no way to center it, the model kept rolling to one side. First one I drilled broke the two sections apart. Second one I drilled was off center, so I had to bend the stand to compensate. The model still doesn’t sit straight, but I gave up on that A) there won’t be much model left if I keep drilling it, B) I got other projects I need to get moving on and C) It looks like an action shot being off center (at least what is what I am trying to convince myself)
  • It was a gift, so I decided to add it to my 1/1400 fleet. Though I don’t care to much for the design either StevenQ. The blatant kitbashing was just silly.

I’m going to get the Saber next to see how that one is.

Pros:

  • REALLY easy ship to put together. 4 parts, fit pretty good (not counting the massive clean-up required).
  • Decals are also pretty nice.
  • They got the scale right, in terms of what I have seen on the internet, so that is good.
  • Its a good ship to try new techniques. (Though I put little effort into painting it… i.e. not even a hint of paneling or aztecing. Not worth the hassle).

Once its done I hope to get pics up. The Sci-Fi forum needs more about Sci-fi models in my opinion!! [:P]

All in all I give the model a B. The Akira I would give an A- too and the Nebula (from what I can see), would be an A-/A.

Hi All,

New on this thread, but saw this post and had to add; I grew up with ‘Lost in Space’ (I was in 3rd grade when it premiered) and still like the old Jupiter II. I also like the Flying Sub… although it’s not a space ship, it is a ship!

In the ST universe, I like NCC-1701A the best, but Voyager and Reliant tie for second with me. Sorry, I’m not familiar as to what class ships they are…

Enterprise-A!! (Sorry, Lee) I too was born and bred on the “classic Enterprise”, but they really perfected it in the A-version, IMHO.

I’m in full agreement with you Paul. The classic lines of Enterprise were refined and IMHO improved by the refit. Of all the starship designs the refit Constitution design is still my favorite.The grand ol’ lady of space was made even grander.

For some reason though, and I don’t quite know why I also like the NX-01 design. Even if it is an obvious derivatve of the Akira.

Voyager is Intrepid class while the Reliant is Miranda Class and are you forgetting that the NCC-1701 A (Refit) is basically the same ship as the NCC-1701 (Refit)

Nope, I did realize the Refit and the “A” are basically the same. I remember sitting in the theater in the first movie staring in awe at the Refit Enterptrise. What year did the first movie come out?
