Best Dang B-17 You ever Saw

I’ve gotta stop going through back issues like this! Anybody remember Paul Budziks B-17F conversion Article in Nov.? 1989 talk about inspiration - i ran out at age 11 bought one and attempted a conversion (read: abortion) that was just a little over my head - that issue still remains taped together in my “old fsms” box and gets pulled every once in awhile to remind me why I do this. Anybody know what happened to paul - never wrote an article after 94’ - and can you find any compilations of his work anywhere?

I don’t know of the one you refer to but I have one on the Lancaster old release by Tamiya in 1/48. The guy spent over 150 hours on it. i am going to attempt to do the same things he did. In a few years that is.

It’s an issue to look for - i’ve never ever seen a 1/48 B-17 built so clean - the photographs could have eisily been taken 60 years ago!

jbatesc6, What was the conversion of the B-17 to, The YB-40?

IIRC, Paul Budzik is a dentist. He must have some magical hands because he did create some incredible models. His casting and fabricating skills were simply on another plane(pardon the pun). I remember his models as being very clean with little or no weathering. His 1/32 P-47D Razorback was the inspiration for my own R-back. Another fantastic modeler is Bob Steinbrun. My first issue of FSM, Jan. '89 I believe, has his backdated YP-80, built from the Monogram kit. Wow. There was a later portfolio of his work in FSM. I think I read that he’s building ship models now. Our loss I guess. later, Gary

Old soldier - he converted the Monogram G to a late model F - and Amen Texgunner! those two guys owned It! - when I first came to the forum i was wondering what happened to steinbrunn - Ship models! Our loss for shure! I can only hope that these guys take the time to really do a good photo Archive of there work or someday - the wealth of info they have would really be something!- not to mention shelves of models to slobber over! Keep putting the word out and maybe they’ll hear!!!

Bob Steinbrun is a remarkable ship modeler.

There comes a time fellas, when aircraft and armor get boring, and where do most modelers go?? Figures or ships, simply because of the difficulty.

I build everything, trust me, it’s not as easy as it appears. Bob is the pinnacle of ship modelers, his stuff ranks amongst the best in the world. He recently did a 1/192 Fletcher class destroyer that has taken Gold or Best of Show in every major ship modeling event in the country.

jbatesc6, thanks. I am looking for the vac. form for the B-17 to a YB-40 and so far no joy.

I well remember Mr. Budzik’s articles in FSM. I think the one you’re referring to is the Wabash Cannonball B-17F. He also did a great PBY Catalina that I remember.

Fantastic stuff!

Regards,

Scratchbuilt PBY no less— been itching at the trigger to go on a full scratch for years now
I certainly won’t Dispute Bobs ships- I know absulutly nothing about ships but I can tell a real sweat one when i see it! Aren’t the scales you build supposed to get bigger as you get older? 1/450th seems painfull!

Hey I have that issue in a tub full of other older FSM.
