What is the best late version King tiger (henschel turret) out? What I mean by ‘best’ is the most detailed and the most bang for my buck. I’ve heard good things about both the Tamiya one and the Dragon. Opinions anyone?
Well I haven’t built a King Tiger but I have a built two of Dragon’s new kits (1/35 Tiger I Initial Production and 1/72 Bradley M2A2 OIF) and they are excellent kits. Most of the recent Dragon kits come with PE sets in the box; my Tiger I even had a turned-aluminum barrel. Again I haven’t seen the Dragon King Tiger but if it was recently realeased it’s probably a great kit with exceptional detail.
I can’t comment on the Dragon Kits, but they come highly recommended by members of this forum. I can tell you that Tamiya’s King Tiger Ardennes is a very nice kit. It doesn’t come with the nice extras and photo etch that the Dragon kits have become famous for. However, it’s a nice modern kit with good detail an great fit. The Tamiya kit comes with a couple of options of gun mantlets, and 4 or 5 different marking options (all for the Ardennes offensive of Dec 44). The tracks are vinyl, the barrel is plastic, and there’s no photo etch grill covers with the kit. The kit does come with 3 nice figures and motor cycle (actually 2 motor cycles, but only decals and instructions for one). If the price is right, it’s a good kit. It certainly has room for plenty of improvement if you’re looking for an aftermarket/superdetail project.

have both, go with the Dragon one. For slightly less price (almost equal on ebay), the Dragon’s late version gives you some PE parts, single link late version style individual tracks, turned aluminum barrel, several rounds, slightly more detailed mold and newer as well, plus an extra set of figures. with Tamiya you get their 1994 mold, mesh for the grilles, vinyl tracks which you have to try to superglue well enough for the sag, and nothing else. Tamiya’s battle of the bulge KT is that plus 3 figures and a bike and a new gun manlet. At the same time Dragon’s BoB KT packs in two sets of figures, indy magic tracks, barrel, grille, and rounds. There you do the maths.
these are off of my head at the moment, any discrepency please somebody correct me.
Tamiya’s latest offerings are decent, but Dragon’s are recently tooled and the later Late version gives you the before mentioned PE, barrel and indy tracks. All of this adds up to a better kit at give or take lesser price. If you don’t want a ton of pieces and are scared off by the indy tracks, then get Tamiya.
or combine both[:P]
Thanks guys! Sounds like I’ll be getting the Dragon BoB KT.
