Bench Seat?

Has anyone had any experiences with scratchbuilding a bench seat? I’m just beginning a build of a '69 Chevelle SS396 to emulate the one I used to have in my youth. The kit is a 1/25 scale AMT/Ertl that comes with the bucket seats and console as one piece, but my Chevelle had a bench seat with the 4-speed. I’m not overly concerned with replicating every last detail, but I’d like to at least cover the more major points…lol

Since I’ve just recently gotten back into the hobby I no longer have much in the way of stash or “extra parts” to draw from (too many moves, too many years) so I’m looking for ideas. Any and all thoughts appreciated!!

If you’ve got accurate plans, could you not make it from laminated (say 40thou) plastic card, carved, filed and sanded to shape? One part for the seat cushion, another for the backrest?

Cheers,

Chris.

Funny that you mention that. After posting, that’s just what I started experimenting with. Not sure how that’s going to work out yet. May end up being wasted time and material but I’ll give it a shot. If nothing else it’ll be a learning experience! I’m using .030" styrene sheet since that’s what I have on hand. If it works out at all I’ll try to post up some pics.

In the meantime, I’m still open to suggestions!!

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far. It’s the first time I’ve scratchbuilt anything and it’s made totally from materials I had on hand. Primarily .030" styrene sheet and 3M Acryl Red putty, filed and sanded to shape. Still needs a little touch-up but it should work for the intended project.

Comments are welcome!

I think you nailed it!

Very nice work. Your scratch looks close to some “factory” parts. Keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words! I’m just starting on the seat backs, and I hope they turn out as well, or better, than the seat bottom. Time will tell…
