Hello! After more than 30 years away, I’ve been bitten by the modeling bug. I was cruising around the Internet a few weeks back and happened upon a set of photos of Hasegawa’s 1:350 scale IJN Akagi, all decked out with photo etch and tricked out to the tiniest detail. Remembering back to wonderful memories of building a red-white-and-blue F-16 with my (now deceased) father, I just simply couldn’t resist. I’m hooked.

I’ve spent the last several weeks drooling over various Japanese aircraft carriers, even buying a couple of 700 scale ships, and shopping around for photo-etch and wood deck overlays. I’ve been gleefully reading various resources regarding construction and painting and detailing.

I’m in the process of putting together the tools and materials I’m needing to create a truly magnificent fleet of Japanese carriers. My goal is to have my own Kido Butai to display in our craft room.

Honestly, the wealth of glues and putties and paints and painting methods has me a little overwhelmed at the moment. Back in the day, I just had a tube of Testors glue and a variety of Testors gloss paints. No putty, no priming, and certainly no PE.

Welcome to the Forum, JB. You’re certainly right about the variety of techniques out there. Ask around when you need some information, and probably someone will have a suggestion. Try 'em out and see what works best for you.

Will look forward to seeing something for your ships. Sounds like a great project!

Welcome aboard.I havve that 1/350 Akagi in my stash,it is a great kit,but mine will be out of the box,I can’t handle all that PE.
