Does anyone have any tips on making bed rolls. Do you use paper towel or tissue paper? I have tried to use some tissue paper and found it very hard to use.
I’ve used a couple of different approaches with this.
- using tissue paper - make a roll out of several layers of tissue paper. Tie it with a couple of strands of string. Apply a 50 / 50 mixture of white glue and water. While still wet press it into the location you want it to sit on the model so it molds to the area. Allow it to dry, cut off the string and paint and weather as desired.
- Das Putty (some others use Milliput) - flatten a piece of putty on a flat surface. Cut to the desired width and roll it up into a bedroll. Once again press it onto the model while still pliable and allow to dry. Paint and weather.
- A/B putty (2 part epoxy putty) - follow the same procedure as method 2.
Das Putty? I think I saw that movie…
I have used sculpty clay and made a pretty good bed roll as well as sandbags. Done the same way as Shermanfreak said.
Thanks guys. I was curious how you got them to look like they are tied up. I guess strings make sense. DUHH!! I will try this out.
You might try using coffee filters. They have a coarse texture, are durable and take dry-brushing well. Just cut a piece the width of your bedroll, tarp or whatever, dip in a little Elmer’s glue / water solution, tie with thread and paint when dry.
Thanks, Leopold. Always great answers to any of my questions. I will also try that.
napkins work too. usually the patterns stamped into them flatten out.
I use the silk lining from a ruined necktie. The fine weave scales down nicely to 1\35th ccoarse cloth.

I like that necktie idea. Thrift stores usually have a bunch of ugly nasty gaudy looking ties for a buck or so that are oversized that nobody in their right mind will buy(they’d get fired for wearing such an ugly thing to work), so that might be a good cheap source for that kind of thing. Makes me wonder what other kind of things like that Ic an find at the local thrift store 2 blocks from my house to use. Hrm…
