I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for what to use as a base for displaying a 1:48 F15E?
I was thinking of using some 1/8" composite fascia board that I use for my HO trains and just painting and striping it but if there is a better solution, please advise!
Although I don’t use display bases (strictly a diorama builder), for almost all my diorama bases, I use various sizes of plastic photo box frames, 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14. They can be cut apart, glued together, easily drilled and you can cut larger openings eor foxholes, drains, whatever, with a hotknife, you can hide battery packs or transformers for fiber optic lighting sources, wiring, etc. underneath, and you can paint them or add wood veneer, or even just contact paper for the frame and reveal. For displaying aircraft like yours, you could just texture and paint the plastic itself to resemble a ramp or hardstand.
I hardly ever use wood or the like any more… The plastic frames are cheap too… 2.99 for an 8x10, 3.99 for the 11x14 at Hobby Lobby…
I really like the frame idea, Hans! Mind if I reappropriate it? [:-^]
I read somewhere (maybe even in this forum) of someone using fine grit sandpaper to simulate a tarmac. Since it all comes in different colors and grits, you can choose something that looks appropriate to your scale. It would just be a matter of filling in the lines and other ground details from there.
