Base Coat

Just wondering what people are using for base coat colors for WWII armour for 3 tone german schemes, solid colors like for Tiger 1 DAK,
T-34, Sherman etc. I have read articles that some use Tamiya Nato Black as a base coat for everything to give a shaded look.

Personally, I primer all my kits with Tamiya rattle can primer. Easy and keeps the acrylic paint I use from lifting. As for a basecoat, that sort of depends on what I am doing. If I plan to show wear thru to the basecoat, I will use either Tamiya Hull Red or Tamiya German Gray, depending on the historical time frame. Then I add a layer of enamel clear coat to protect it, spray my colors and then take a Qtip soaked in acrylic thinnder and rub it on the edges. Takes off the camo coat, with the base showing thru. But mostly, I just preshade panel lines and other areas I desire to be shaded (recesses, weld lines, etc) with black, then spray (lightly) my camo colors. No base coat other than primer. Andy chipping or wear is done with a paint brush and or drawing pencil

Ditto what Jwest said about Tamya fine surface primer. Good stuff.

I really like the effect from that method. Here is one that was “primered” with Krylon gloss black (decanted to the airbrush) and then painted with some testors flat green (the little square bottles).

That is a real nice paint job you have there Paul. I assume that the OD color is sprayed on uneven so a little black shows though here and there?

Yup it was done on purpose Thanks for noticing. It is very difficult for me because I am heavy handed with the airbrush. I have to almost grit my teeth to hold back [:D]

I hear you. A couple times I get it right and then for some unexplained reason put a little more paint down. Duh
