Does anyone know if RAF camouflage color Barley gray is named for a person or the plant? I know, it’s a strange question.

That’s an interesting question. I have seen furniture which is barley beige and barley silver as well as barley grey. I did a bit of searching and found mention of a Mr P J Barley who worked at Farnborough. But a search of the name finds nothing. He was mentioned here as well as at least one other site.

I was going to go with the plant, but could not work out where they got grey barley from.
I believe it was named after a scientist asscoiated with Farnborough who “invented” it, maybe in the 70’s. I saw reference to it here:

When I worked at a locomotive factory here in Boise, we used a color called Antares Gray. Where did they get that from? [*-)]
Wow, that is a crazy one! Antares is a star, whose name means opposite Ares (Mars). Now, Mars is a bit reddish color I can see an Ares red, but neither star nor planet seems to evoke gray!

I always presumed Barley Grey was named after the colour of cooked barley in Haggis.[:P]…but I’m not very familiar with post WWII British colours and never bothered comparing the shades.[^o)]
Never occured to me that someone might have Barley as a family name. [:O]

The info I can find on P J Barley is limited but I did find a report he wrote while at the Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough in 1980 called " A further evaluation of paint schemes for the camouflage of aircraft against ground to air optical detection" it gets a mention here on page 8
I cant find the report online however.
