My first attempt at BMF. I figured I’d start in 1/72 to see what would happen. It worked quite well except doing sharp round corners like on the end of the drop tanks but learned a ton.

Well I see that didn’t work so well. I guess like all first time photo posters I’ve got more to learn.

The kit is an Academy and the decals were the kit decals. The model was built OOB. I wanted to try Bare Metal Foil so I got the regular chrome which is more than bright enough. I’ve use Aluminum foil but it won’t go around curves like BMF.

I’m still trying to put together my Academy 1/48 Sabre, but i stalled because i’m not too sure how to do the natural metal… I tried BMF on some surfaces, but it didn’t reveal the smaller details like i thought it would. So i might just go with more convetional techniques… Fantasic job, by the way! Did you take a few pictures of the build, perhaps? I’m real keen on seeing just how you applied the BMF! [:D]

Thanks Shrikes and all for the good words. As far as the bare metal finish goes I didn’t take any shots along the way as I just got a digital camera. I bought the Bare Metal Foil regular chrome finish because the aluminum was too hard to work with and the extra shiny chrome was too shiny. The foil goes on great and what’s nice about doing aircraft is you have so many panel lines to trim to. It doesn’t take very long till you can see how far you can stretch the foil. It’s pretty amazing stuff. Like I said earlier, you can only go around tight round surfaces so well. I found by cutting a small piece and putting it on the round surface and burnishing back as far as you can till it wrinkles badly then trim back to remove the wrinkles. Now you can lay the long side pieces on and blend into the tip. With BMF you can blend and burnish till the joint is almost invisible.

Cool!! Doing a bare metal foil is my planned next project… I will post some pictures if all goes well.
