I want to chrome around the fronts of my minicraft boeing 737 engines. When using bare metal, if one cuts a strip to go around a cylinder shape, it won’t go on straight and will crease. How do I pull this off?
If a cylinder won’t fit where you want it to, you are going to have to cut very thin strips of tape and carefully outline the chrome area. Or find narrow drafting tape or some such.
You could use shorter lengths with a very slight overlap and burnish real well.
or
When the foil starts to crimp, slice the crimp and restraighten - again burnish real well.
Wayne; look at my question; then look at your answer. The cutting of thin strips is already a given. Duhh! Plus, what’s the deal with the huge space wasting patch?
Dude,
No reason to get snotty.
I’ll help you but only if you don’t bitch at me afterwards for it. [;)]
Make a template out of a piece of scrap paper. Lay the paper flat on to your foil and cut out, and you will notice that the strip will curve. Now you should have one nice strip that naturally fits the curved shape of your nacelle.
thank you kik; i genuinely appreciate it. I guess I have a low tollerance thing when people answer my question with the very question that was asked…
But for the sake of understanding; why all the space killing huge decals??? Individuality is great, but why so huge? there’s more “personality pics” than text in this forum.
Thanks again for your courtesy.
Honestly there used to be much larger sigs in everyone’s posts until FSM came out with new guidelines such as outlined in this link: http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38673
Why we do it…I honestly couldn’t tell you…lol I never really notice because I use cable. But as long as they fall into the guidelines, everyone is clean. Now this guideline just started, so FSM is giving everyone some time to adjust their sigs.
Hope you get your Bare Metal Foil worked out, and hope to see some pics of the finished project!
kik; just to be sure; you were suggesting that my template, after tracing, would be cut somewhat like a donut, right? I’ll give it a go this weekend. my first couple of runs had creases. I’m just trying to get a clean, crease free foil job.
template should work well (duh…why didn’t I think of that)…just hope that you are not trying to do inside and out leading edge of the nacelle.
(as for others - I don’t know. Mine are to remind me which group builds I am in and have to complete)
It will actually look more like an oval doughnut, but I think you got the basic concept. You will probably still have to make a slit and have a seam to assist in wrapping it. Just put the seam on the bottom of the nacelle, and try to make sure to burnish down completely and the seam will all but dissappear as long as you cut it to the shape of your template.
My badges also are a sense of pride, and I am also a proud Saab fanatic, so I get to converge the 2 together. And it is a quick reference to who is in the various group builds with me.
I’m hoping to wrap around the front of the engines up to the scored line. I should post a pic.
Kik; you’re usmc pic appears to have a lot of substance. Pride in things is great too. I just wondered why they were so large. For example, when you click on this topic, it actually takes a moment for wayne’s to appear cause it’s so huge (size and bytes). I think it would be cool if one had a “bar” of pics that were the size of your USMC pic. Kind of like an officer’s uniform medals.
