Well lads, I managed to pick up an Italeri Tiger 1 E/H1 in 35th scale. Anyone done this kit before? Anything I need to look out for?
I’m not that excited about the green or tan camo patterns, and have already ordered my osprey book on tigers. You lot have seriously infected me with the hard stuff… I’ve got no idea how to tell this to my girlfriend… Never the less I’m looking forward to this build. Semi seperate track links (i.e. some stretches of links on the flat sections and seperate links for sag and curves). I will be looking into zimmerite and some PE… This will be the first time i get aftermarket stuff. Speaking of which, there are some PE sets aimed at Tamiya tigers, but would they fit on the italeri kit?
Oh, Sherman… I will some day do a Sherman. I haven’t turned to the dark side completely… Honestly! [angel]
Decent Tiger kit, although the experten will inform you that the Tamiya Tigers and Academy Tigers are superior (which they are). I have the exact same kit as well as the Tamiya Afrika Tiger and they are not in the same league. Don’t get me wrong, the Italeiri kit is a very nice model, but in terms of accuracy, fit and detail, not quite up to Tamiya’s standards.
The “Late” version of this kit includes molded on zimmerit detail and thick pieces of styrene zimmerit. I have a review of this kit kicking around somewhere.
Okay, thanks for the info Rob… It’ll be a nice prelude to the Tamiya Tiger I haven’t yet swiped off the x-mas list… To be honest I did spot the Academy Tiger (with interiour), but as that was stupidly more than my budget would allow, so I had to just let it be for now.
My Tiger collection went about in a rather odd way. I won the Tamiya late Tiger online by writing an Italeri HMMWV article. I then bought the Italeri Tiger for $15 to practice on before I built the Tamiya one. I ran across someone selling the Tamiya Afrika one for $20 delivered, so I bought it (no zimmerit to mess with). This made my Tamiya late Tiger excess. Someone then wanted to trade the Academy mid-production Tiger with interior for my Tamiya late Tiger. I just sold the Academy kit for $35, so I broke even and now have just the Tamiya Afrika Tiger and Italeri Tiger.
My favorite Tiger is still the Academy kit with all the ‘innards’ in 'er. Wish they’d do a mid-production Sherman that nice! Drool… drool… Love them interiors!
I have to agree with tigerman - got the Acadamy tiger I early kit and the build went great so I got the mid version (still have to build). Since then I have bought the bergetiger and have built the sturm and king (porshe turrent) and plan to put the whole family into a “fit together, stand alone” diarama. I am going to take two pieces of douglas fir and cut them to form an inverted V shape. From this I will make individual stands and mount a tiger on each piece. The tiger I will sit on the front left piece with the tiger I mid next to it in desert colors. A snow bank from the early diarama will fit into a sand bank from the tiger I mid, which will fit into a hedgerow for a king tiger, which will fit into a low town wall for the sturm and so on. I figure this will take about five more years with the amount of time I am able to spend on my modelling, but it should be well worth it.
