Bad paint? or stupid operator

I recently ordered a bunch of Modelflex (Badger) paints. (All acrylics by the way.I) Included with this order was a large bottle of a new custom mixed color. Whenever I get a new bottle of paint, I always paint a patch on a piece of evergreen styrene and mark the brand and color etc. for future reference.

[V] Wouldn’t you know, the $12.00 custom color beaded up on the plastic and could not be brushed. It was as though there was oil on the plastic, which there wasn’t. All the other colors worked just fine. The paint was stirred thoroughly. (I use a battery operated stirrer). I tried a different piece of plastic sheet, same result. Anybody ever run into this or have any suggestions? Returning the paint seems obvious, but for $12 it’s hardly worth the hassle.

Try using a primer before brushing this paint onto the plastic. I’ve heard of this problem before in one of the other posts here but I’m not sure whether or not a true solution was determined.

I’ve already tried dabbing this over another color. This paint was intended to be sprayed. The brushing was only for a sample color chip. I guess what I’m wondering is if it’s possible for the paint to be contaminated or if adding a little alcohol for a wetting agent would help or hinder. I’ve been using acrylics for about 7 years and this is the first time I’ve run into this?

I would try spraying a small sample over both an area that has been primed and also over another area that hasn’t and see what it does then. if it doesn’t work then I would be tempted to contact Badger and see what they have to say. They may just send you a replacement without too much trouble.

I’d say ask for your money back. Sounds like they(the brand) thinned the paint out too much at the factory. Rare, but it happens. Just like sometimes a bottle of Model Master Clear Green Acryl will actually be opaque!

Wondering if you ever solved the Modelflex problem you were having? and, do you usually use Modelflex products?
